Game 3 of the Utah Jazz and Memphis Grizzlies tips off on Saturday, May 29th. The young upstart Grizzlies shocked the Jazz by taking the opening match 112-109.
Utah pulled out the big stars in Game 2 with Donovan Mitchell returning to the court and won 141-129 to even up the series. Now the teams head to Memphis for the next two matches.
This is the first time the franchises are facing each other in post-season play.
It was a veritable certainty Donovan Mitchell would suit up for Game 2, especially after the Jazz lost the opening match.
Utah held the best home record throughout the regular season but even with the win in Game 2 needed to play to the buzzer as Ja Morant refuses to accept his team are supposed to lose.
Mitchell didn’t show any rust despite missing the last 16 regular-season games and the first match of this series. He dropped 25 points in his 26 minutes but came out on fire scoring 12 points including three 3-pointers in the opening frame (first eight minutes he played).
He cooled off but his teammates responded to create a double-digit lead. Mike Conley and Rudy Gobert both registered double-doubles of 20 points and 15 assists and 21 points with 13 rebounds respectively.
Bojan Bogdanovic chipped in with 18 points while newly crowned Sixth Man of the Year, Jordan Clarkson offered 16 points.
The 47 points Ja Morant scored ironically bested the previous franchise high of the man opposite him in Utah (Mike Conley).
The sophomore was the only Grizzly rolling in the first half but much of that was tied to early foul trouble for Dillon Brooks and Jonas Valanciunas.
Brooks got hot just as he had in Game 1, adding 23 points while hitting both his 3-point attempts. Jonas Valanciunas scored 18 points with six rebounds.
Yet losing JV and Brooks before the halfway mark of the first quarter put the Grizzlies in a tough situation. Heading to Memphis we’ll have to keep a close eye on the foul calls since they can ill afford to miss both those starters for extended periods of time.
In their absence, Jaren Jackson Jr. stepped up looking more and more comfortable as he returns from the knee injury that kept him out the majority of this season. JJJ offered up 16 points.
Another major issue was the Grizzlies reserve unit who scored a measly 14 points compared to the Jazz reserves who scored 43 points with Clarkson and Joe Ingles accumulating 16 and 14 points respectively.
That’s not typical for Memphis whose bench scored 39.1 points per game ranking sixth best.

Free Utah Jazz vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
While this should theoretically be an easy series for the Jazz, Morant and Brooks are offering leadership for this scrappy, gritty club who refuse to concede and it’s making for extremely entertaining matches.
Utah will win the series but this Grizzlies team is one player away from being a perennial playoff club and perhaps one more vet away from being in the conversation for serious contenders depending on Jackson’s development.
