Friday, June 18th the LA Clippers will endeavor to clinch a trip to the Western Conference Finals by winning Game 6 versus the top ranked Utah Jazz.
LA put themselves in this position with a big victory in Utah without the services of Kawhi Leonard who sustained a sprained knee at the end of Game 4.
Utah Jazz
Just as they have throughout this series the Jazz was hot from the perimeter collecting 20 triples but perhaps got a bit carried away launching 57 of them. Their streak of making 17 or more triples extended to eight games in a row.
One streak did end, however, as Donovan Mitchell failed to score 30 or more points which lasted six games. The Jazz star collected 21 points, with five rebounds, five assists, and a steal.
Mitchell winced throughout the game as he tried to play through the pain in his ankle especially on drives but his jump shot was off too as he shot 6 of 19 from the field and 4 of 14 from deep.
Bojan Bogdanovic led scoring with 32 points while Rudy Gobert produced a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Clarkson scored 15 while Joe Ingles and Royce O’Neal each chipped in 12 points.
Mike Conley (hamstring) hasn’t played in the series and was out again.
LA Clippers
For the third consecutive game, Paul George scored 30 or more points, however, there was one discernable difference – – he did it on the road without Leonard.
George has taken a ton of heat for disappearing in the postseason especially since his days in Indiana. It didn’t help that he dubbed himself ‘Playoff P’.
Although he was citing his defense in fairness it’s not like he slowed Mitchell prior to his ankle acting up or Luka Doncic in Round 1 or Damian Lillard who hit the infamous wave goodbye, game-winning shot in his face.
Returning to the Pacers theme, I’ve often wondered what happened to “that” PG and maybe the answer is simple. Is he less aggressive offensively when playing by another superstar like Russell Westbrook or Leonard? The stats say YES.
But, it’s an argument that we’ll need to revisit after Game 6 because his performance leading the Clippers to a victory in Utah was among the top five of the season. He delivered a massive double-double of 37 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, a steal, and two blocks.
Reggie Jackson was equally impressive particularly down the stretch as he repeatedly hit shots to thwart every Jazz momentum surge scoring 22 in the game and 12 in the final frame.
Marcus Morris Sr. was effective the entire match scoring 25 points and Terance Mann added 13 points including one very impressive dunk over Gobert.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Jazz are 5-5 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings.
- The Clippers are 5-4-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these clubs
- The over/under is 4-5-1 in the last 10 contests between the clubs.
Free Utah Jazz vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
Ramp up the drama factor as both Conley and Mitchell are listed as questionable while the Clippers confirmed late Thursday Leonard is definitely out.
Questions abound because the Jazz will be playing desperate to stay in the series while LA will feel the pressure of having to close the series without their best player.
I’m going with my gut that both Conley and Mitchell play and push the series to a Game 7.
