Derrick Favors was one against two on Wednesday night against the Pelicans. The Jazz, usually such a good home team, could not slow New Orleans’ offense and fell by ten, 108–98.
Davis and Cousins combined to shoot 18-for-37 on the inside against Favors and grabbed 26 rebounds as a pair. Jrue Holiday scored 26 points of efficient shooting from the field to chip on on the perimeter.
The Pelicans turned it over 20 times, which was all that kept it close. Utah’s offense was more of the problem, rather than its defense. The Jazz missed 25 three-pointers and Joe Johnson and Donovan Mitchell were the only consistent scoring options. They combined for 44 but weren’t particularly efficient, as the Pelicans could just key in on them and induce misses from the outside.
Rodney Hood has to be a consistent scorer for a team that lacks firepower, even when he is shooting well. He just hasn’t shown the ability to do it over a long stretch of games. Hood went 1-for-10 and missed all six of his three-point shots in the loss.
Denver was fantastic against Phoenix on Wednesday, most especially Gary Harris, who went 14-for-17 from the field and made all of his free throws for 36 points a blowout win at the Pepsi Center.
Nikola Jokic had 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in 36 minutes as a member of the starting five. He had been coming off the bench for a while as he returned from his ankle injury. It’s good to see him back at full strength.
The Nuggets ought to be ready to put some wins together. They have this home game that they should win. Then they have three easy games spread around one trip to Oracle Arena in the next four. They’ll play in Sacramento and then at home against the Hawks and Grizzlies.
In general, January and February are littered with home games that should put the Nuggets in a strong position to hold onto a middle seed in the Western Conference down the stretch. The real kicker is the division. The Northwest is crowded, but Denver is just four back of Minnesota, who some don’t trust down the stretch of what’s been a long season for their starters. If the Nuggets can get back into the race for the division crown, they could earn an especially valuable home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
