These two squads are extremely familiar with one another and have a brewing rivalry. They began 2018 with an overtime match the Raptors won in overtime on New Year’s Night.
Last season, the Raptors took three of the four contests and also took down Milwaukee in the playoffs. The Bucks hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors 47 of 83 matches.
DeMar DeRozan spent his New Years Eve in a practice gym preparing for the match on Monday evening.. Apparently this practice time worked since the shooting guard delivered 21 first quarter points. By the time DeRozan finished the game he had posted a single game franchise best 52 points.
And, he did it efficiently shooting 17 of 29, 5 of 9 from deep and was perfect from the stripe shooting 13 for 13.
DeRozan is known for two things being the king of the mid range and adding something new to his game every offseason. Although analysts never anticipated he’d get the perimeter shot his recent prowess is proving otherwise. Since December 15 he’s hit 26 of 49 treys for 53%.
Toronto’s bench is their x-factor with a different player tending to produce on any given night. In the win over the Bulls that player was Delon Wright who scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds (both career highs).
The Raptors are one of only four teams (Warriors, Rockets, Wizards) who rank top 10 in offense (4th), defense (6th) and net differential (3rd).
When the Bucks showcase their talent to its full potential it’s hard to believe they don’t rank higher. Behind MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo Milwaukee are stellar offensively, but their 22nd ranked defense leaves much to be desired.
The confusion is based on the fact this is the team who finished 2nd defensively in 2014-15 then slide to 22nd the following season. Last year the Bucks produced the best defense of the postseason. So, with many of the same players returning and upgrades made it’s hard to understand the regression this season.
Jabari Parker is on assignment with the G League and would seemingly be headed for an imminent return to the varsity squad. Jason Kidd is in the hot seat given the team’s defensive regression, so how he integrates Parker back into the roster and whether he starts Parker or uses him as a reserve is sure to come under ample debate.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Raptors are 7-3 in last 10 head to head meetings.
- Teams are 5-5 against the spread in last 10 head to head contests.
- Over – Under is 4-6 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction: Raptors -1
For as much as the Raptors beat the Bucks New Year’s Day it took 52 points from DeMar DeRozan and Toronto didn’t play to their strengths. One obvious was Dwane Casey had the Raptors firing away from deep to take advantage of the Bucks 30th ranked perimeter defense. Still, Milwaukee will want to send a message, so expect a physical, aggressive defense more in line with what the Bucks can be, not what they’ve been to this point in the season.
Ultimately whichever squad makes the best adjustments defensively from Monday’s overtime match will have the edge.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Raptors -1
Something tells me this could be a knockdown, drag out battle and in that case I feel more confident the Raptors get the ‘W’ given their bench will be keen to outperform the Bucks coupled with the Raptors ability to make quick adjustments. Still, it’s likely this one comes down to final buzzer. The single point truly does make this a pick em.
