Monday, November 14th, finds the Toronto Raptors and the Detroit Pistons meeting for the first of four occasions this season. Toronto will host on February 12th and March 24th while Detroit will host again on February 25th.
Both clubs completed back-to-back sets on Saturday with the Raptors losing 104-118 to the Pacers while the Pistons lost 108-117 to the Celtics.
The Pistons have swept the series for two consecutive seasons and hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors in 60 of 98 matches.
Toronto Raptors
Rarely in Nick Nurse’s tenure has he raised the white flag as he did in OKC but he told the post-game media he knew his team didn’t have ‘it’ on Friday.
Given Fred VanVleet joined Pascal Siakam and Precious Achiuwa on the sidelines and knowing Scottie Barnes is fighting through copious bumps and bruises it made sense in retrospect.
Toronto played with more aggression on Saturday but struggled to find offense. They weren’t happy about a disregarded over-and-back and an offensive foul which Indy used to expand a three-point lead to double-digits and seemingly sapped whatever energy they had left.
The reality is there are nights where the calls seem overly biased but the key is to use that as motivation – check out the Warriors-Cavaliers game Friday for a perfect example of how it’s done.
Unfortunately, the Raptors who typically are feisty were missing their top two players (and two rotation players), got to Indy at 3:00 am following the game in OKC and were playing their fifth game in seven nights.
Bottom line – they’re exhausted, depleted, and limping into Detroit where Dwane Casey is drooling at the opportunity to whack his former team for the seventh consecutive time.
VanVleet (illness) was downgraded to out while Khem Birch is questionable for Monday. Siakam (groin) and Achiuwa (ankle) are out indefinitely.
Detroit Pistons
Preseason teams were pegged as tankers for Victor Wembanyama but many haven’t lived up to those expectations. The Jazz were the biggest shock but the Thunder, Pacers, and Spurs are winning as much as teams expected to be right in the thick of playoff berth contention.
Ironically, Detroit was expected to be the young team stepping up because they have Cade Cunningham, young assets and added Bojan Bogdanovic which sure seemed like the type of deal a team makes to add depth and be competitive.
Of course, these teams could abruptly down shift after the trade deadline or if the others (Rockets, Magic, Pistons) establish too much distance and dibs on the coveted bottom three slot.
That said, the one team Dwane Casey won’t allow his team to bring anything less than 100 percent against is his former Raptors squad.
Alec Burks (conditioning) is probable for Monday while Cunningham (shin) is out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Toronto is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- Detroit is 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Toronto is 2-4 SU in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Detroit’s last 7 games.
Toronto Raptors vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Analysis:
The Raptors are 4-14 without Siakam and VanVleet in the lineup. Barnes is definitely laboring with that ankle (and knee) and Gary Trent Jr. picked a terrible time to go into a slump (1 of 13 on Saturday).
Nurse no doubt will use everything in his power to rile his troop to end the losing streak against Detroit. Cunningham being out definitely helps but Toronto needs Barnes and/or GTJ to help OG Anunoby who can’t carry the offense alone.
Nurse might use Jeff Dowtin – a proven scorer that could offer the offensive burst the Raptors need.
Of the past six meetings this is the most vulnerable Toronto has been facing the Casey Pistons so watch this be when they end the streak. Regardless, I’ve been burnt too many times by this matchup so I’m taking the Pistons and the points.
