The Boston Celtics cannot lose. But in comes a Toronto Raptors team that looks like the stiffest competition Boston has at the moment in the Eastern Conference.
Toronto won three out of its four games against the Celtics last season. But Boston was a much different team last year and Toronto didn’t look exactly the way it does now, either.
The Raptors lost PJ Tucker off their bench but fortified their bench with CJ Miles, who can score much better than anybody Toronto had coming off the pine last season.
In fact, Toronto’s best lineup when taking into account +/-, offensive efficiency and defensive efficiency is its five bench players. The Raptors have a luxury few other teams do of being able to play five bench players together in a single lineup effectively.
Of course, Lowry and DeRozan are pretty good too. Two consecutive wins and a day to rest will have Toronto ready to snap this Boston win streak.
The Celtics came back from 16 points down in the second half on Friday night to stun Charlotte in the Garden.
The Celtics did it without Al Horford for the whole game and Kyrie Irving, who missed the second half to be evaluated for a concussion.
Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and the scrappy Celtics’ bench led the comeback, including a 26–11 fourth quarter.
At this point, it seems clear Brad Stevens is the best coach in the Eastern Conference and that it isn’t even close. He has the Celtics playing at the sort of level Patriots fans have been used to seeing Bill Belichick command from his decimated teams over the years.
But Boston will need Kyrie Irving in this game because of Toronto’s defense. The Celtics are great at moving the ball and bodies in sync to get open shots for anybody but they need at least one playmaker on the floor.
If Irving can’t go, increased minutes for Marcus Smart and Terry Rozier will help the defense, though. Kyle Lowry would much rather go at Irving; I guarantee that.

Free Toronto Raptors vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction: it goes under.
Marcus Smart has the worst field goal percentage in the NBA right now at 29 percent. If Irving does miss the game, this one could be down in the 80s or 90s. I don’t think he will but also don’t think it will matter much as far as getting the under goes.
Both defenses are tough and will play tough in a game with some high-ish stakes for mid-November.
