The San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns have both started their 2016-17 NBA seasons off with big wins. And yet, it’s the former that has the league talking after opening night. The Kings took down the Phoenix Suns on the road, 113-94.
The Kings took down the Phoenix Suns on the road Wednesday night, 113-94. It was a good win against a young Phoenix team with a lot of energy and the home crowd behind it.
The Spurs? They just went into Oracle Arena and completely dismantled the superteam that is the Kevin Durant-enhanced Golden State Warriors, 129-100.
The Spurs have the league on watch at this early point in the process, but for now, it’s Sacramento that has all eyes on San Antonio.
San Antonio Spurs
Nobody had the Spurs going into a hostile environment like Oracle and taking down the Warriors in such grand fashion. If you claim you did, you’re lying or you’re the biggest San Antonio homer on the planet.

In that contest, many things became clear about the Spurs. For starters, LaMarcus Aldridge is still an incredibly effective player despite rumors that he may not be happy (and that the team may look to move him before the All-Star break). He had 26 points and 14 rebounds in 35 minutes.
The next thing that was made clear is that Kawhi Leonard is every bit of the two-way threat he’s advertised as being. The soft-spoken San Diego State product scored 35 points and collected five rebounds while running across the floor chasing the Warriors’ high-octane offensive weapons.
We also learned that this team is deep (if you didn’t already know). Jonathan Simmons came out of nowhere, exploding onto the scene in front of a massive national audience; Patty Mills was effective in his 18 minutes; and with Pau Gasol’s near-silent performance having no impact on the outcome, it bodes well for the future when he becomes more comfortable in a new system.

Simply put: The Spurs are a force to be reckoned with.
Watch out, Sacramento.
Sacramento Kings
The Kings’ win over Phoenix on Wednesday deserves more recognition than it’s getting. No, the Suns aren’t a playoff hopeful at this point in their rebuild, but Sacramento ended up with a few noteworthy performances.
When looking at the Kings, you always start with the man in the middle. DeMarcus Cousins 24 points on just 10 shot attempts. He shot an efficient 6-of-10 from the floor, and an excellent 12-of-16 from the foul line.
Rudy Gay also made his mark clear on the stat sheets with 22 points and four rebounds. Ty Lawson put his speed on full display scoring nine points and recording seven assists.

What was most interesting about this game was the series of runs that took place. At one point, Sacramento’s second unit went on an 18-1 run to put this game seemingly out of the Suns’ reach. But by the third quarter, the contest was back within 10.
This is a sign that Sacramento can come out of nowhere and slap an opponent in the face. That said, it’s also a sign that the Kings’ second unit is likely far better than the one Phoenix currently employees.
Sacramento won’t have that advantage aginst the Spurs.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Sacramento Kings NBA Prediction:
Until we see the Spurs drop a game they’re supposed to win, it’s difficult to pick against them when they’re heavily favored.
Don’t expect Thursday to be the night that happens.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: SAS -8
The NBA season is young and anything can happen. But the Spurs look possessed early in the year, and Sacramento is likely to be San Antonio’s second victim in 2016-17.
