Wednesday night features a matchup of two Western Conference teams on opposite ends of the competitive spectrum.
San Antonio enters this contest as a seven-point road favorite over the home Sacramento Kings.
San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs aren’t too concerned with regular-season showings considering they’re built to win now and win big. That said, they haven’t looked like the superteam most believed would be entering the year.
So far this season, San Antonio is scoring just 101.2 points per contest. In today’s modern era of NBA basketball, that’s only good enough for 20th in the Association.
Defensively, the Spurs are as effective as you’d expect a Gregg Popovich-led team to be. They are giving up just 96.1 points per game, which is good enough for third in the league.
They’re also fifth in terms of defensive efficiency, trailing only the Los Angeles Clippers, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Detroit Pistons.
Against Sacramento, the goal will be to get guys like Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge going early. Considering how San Antonio has had trouble putting up high scoring numbers, getting both of these guys above 20 points is crucial — Leonard is leading the team in points per game at 25.5.
If Aldridge isn’t on top of his game, getting a solid production from Pau Gasol will be next in terms of goals. The big man hasn’t had a huge impact offensively, but he seems to be coming into his own at this point in the process.
Remember how the Spurs have had trouble putting up big scoring numbers this season? It’s even worse for the Kings.
So far this year, Sacramento is putting up just 99.8 points per game. That’s only 23rd in the NBA, and it’s even more troublesome than you think when you consider the Kings don’t have an elite defense like San Antonio’s.
On the season, Sacramento is a middle-of-the-pack group at best on D, ranking 16th in the league in points allowed at 103.6 per contest.
The good news if you’re a Sacramento fan? This team should be well rested.
The Kings haven’t played a game since Friday, Nov. 11. The Spurs, on the other hand, had to travel from San Antonio to make this one following a Monday-night game against the Miami Heat.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Sacramento Kings NBA Prediction:
Rest is going to help the Kings. But this early in the season, it’s not going to play a big enough factor against a team that is hoping to compete for a Western Conference title at year’s end.
