Thursday, November 17th, finds the San Antonio Spurs facing the Sacramento Kings for the first of four scheduled matches this season. The Spurs will host on February 1st and January 15th and the teams will close out the series in Sacramento on April 2nd.
Both clubs last played on Tuesday with the Spurs losing 110-117 to the Blazers while the Kings absolutely pounded the Nets 153-121 establishing the highest point tally achieved in the NBA this season.
Last season, the squads played three times with Sacramento taking two of the three matches. The Spurs hold the all-time record having bested the Kings in 125 of their 187 matches.
San Antonio Spurs
After getting out to a 5-2 start to the season and surprising some unprepared teams the Spurs are suddenly in free fall losing seven of their last eight contests.
This was more of what pundits and analysts expected to start the season. And yet, Gregg Popovich has his team fired up to compete regardless of the score or the competitors.
Offensively, the Spurs score 112.0 points per game which ranks 15th overall. San Antonio shoots 46.6% from the field ranking 17th, and 36.6% from the perimeter ranking in a tie for 10th.
Defensively, the Spurs allow opponents to score the most points per game (119.5). San Antonio also ranks dead last in both opponent field goal percentage (49.7 percent) and 3-point percentage (39.2 percent).
Romeo Langford (conditioning) and Malaki Branham (ankle) were downgraded to out for Thursday. Zach Collins (leg) and Blake Wesley (MCL) are out indefinitely.
Sacramento Kings
While I’ll keep touting the need to get 20 games in the bank before committing to a definitive stance it’s hard not to be impressed by the early-season Kings.
With the big victory versus the Nets, the Kings moved above .500 but the reality is they could easily be 9-4 or 10-3 if not for some poor late-game officiating.
The two most egregious missed calls got confirmation the following day in the Last Minute game report. Refs missed Tyler Herro’s travel on his 3-point shot (Heat won by 3) as well as a Klay Thompson foul on Kevin Huerter (Dubs win by 3).
Neither instance would’ve automatically given the Kings the game outright but both games likely extend to overtime if the proper calls are made.
What the win versus the Nets punctuated was Mike Brown has made a positive impact on this team, the Kings have great depth, and are clicking offensively.
The truth is even if they aren’t showing it yet, this squad has the potential to be a decent two-way team but Brown will need to get them focused on playing D for all 48 minutes as their next step.
Keegan Murray (back) is questionable for Thursday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Spurs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Kings are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of San Antonio’s last 7 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Sacramento’s last 6 games.
- San Antonio is 1-7 SU in their last 8 games.
- Sacramento is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games at home.
Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Sacramento Kings NBA Prediction:
It’s a given the Spurs will compete so it’s equally important Mike Brown keeps his team focused since it’s natural instinct to relax after a big win and facing a lower-tier club.
That makes this contest ripe to be a trap game and although Sacramento should win and cover based on their capabilities, it wouldn’t surprise if the Spurs either steal the game or keep it closer than the spread.
I’m thinking San Antonio shocks the Kings because they get into a shoot-out and this ends up giving Mike Brown the ammunition he needs to get the Kings to take defense more seriously.
