Monday, November 19 finds the San Antonio Spurs meeting up vs. the New Orleans Pelicans to play the second of their scheduled four games this season. San Antonio arrives to complete a back to back set in which they shocked the Warriors defeating them at Oracle. Likewise, the Pelicans won their past game taking down the Nuggets with relative ease.
Last season, the Pelicans took the season series winning three of four games between the Southwest Division rivals, but San Antonio won the initial meeting in their four game series for this year. The Spurs hold the all-time record having bested the Pelicans in 44 of their 61 matches.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs won every quarter of the match Sunday versus the Warriors. Albeit, Golden State was missing both Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, but this was a clinical win by San Antonio after losses to lower tier teams.
DeMar DeRozan has settled in perfectly with his new squad and expanded his role. Specifically, DeRozan has become more of a playmaker in the absence of Dejounte Murray and lack of guard depth.
DeRozan is producing career highs in assists (6.3) and rebounds (6.3) this season.
One oddity is Gregg Popovich is playing the shooting guard 37.0 minutes per game (last season he played 33.9 mpg) which goes against his principle of playing his stars fewer minutes to keep them healthy.
Davis Bertans (concussion protocol) missed the Warriors game and is uncertain for Monday as is Pau Gasol (foot soreness). Lonnie Walker (torn meniscus) and Dejounte Murray (torn ACL) are both out for an extended period.
New Orleans Pelicans
Anthony Davis claimed he was the best player in the league at season start and at times (Raptors) the superstar and his team has looked every bit the part.
With Jrue Holiday showcasing his prowess as a two-way guard he may well be headed to the All-Star game for his first appearance.
Adding shooters like Nikola Mirotic and bigs like Julius Randle who can stretch the court position the Pelicans to be among the West’s best.
Inconsistencies on defense to this point are the only factor holding back the squad. New Orleans boasts the fifth ranked offense and 23rd ranked defense.
Elfrid Payton returned to the lineup following an ankle injury and no sooner took the court when he fractured his left pinky finger. Payton will be out for an extended period.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. New Orleans Pelicans NBA Prediction:
With an extra day’s rest, the Pelicans hold an edge. The key matchup will be Holiday on DeRozan. Historically DeRozan hasn’t faired as well versus taller guards, so give the edge to Holiday.
