The Spurs might have finally found their groove. It seemed logical that the coach was going to find some way to maximize the pieces that he had and be competitive in the West. This will be a test.
At the same time I am not sure if the Clippers can have staying power in the Conference. Odds are they are fighting at the end for playoff positioning.

The Spurs have won eight of ten and are now just a half game out of first place in the Southwest Division. Memphis has finally faded and Houston is playing better but I can see the Spurs remaining in that slot in between the two.

On their recent run the most notable thing is a defensive improvement. They are 13th overall in points allowed but in 9 of those 10 contests they held opponents below their season average and in 6 of those they held them under 100 points.
The offensive strategy is pretty simple. They are using DeMar DeRozan as more of a point guard than what he was in Toronto and trying to maximize the production of him and Lamarcus Aldridge. Both are very good offensive player but they can’t really afford an off day.

After those two they hope the shooting holds up and that somebody else emerges on a nightly basis. They are willing to give their reserves real time on the floor but they do not always produce.
This will be the second game of back to back for San Antonio. They are at Denver the night before which probably sets them up as a fade in this situation.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers will be on a back to back too and are technically on the road when they take on the Lakers on Friday night. They have won three of four but only four of their last 10 including an ugly loss on the road to the Spurs – they lost by 38 points.
I still have trouble seeing them as one of the best scoring teams in the NBA but in their last game all five starters posted at least 11 points and two players came off the bench with 20+. That is pretty impressive depth. By not relying too heavily on any one player maybe they can keep it up.

The key to the season might be the development of rookie point Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Clippers are not asking him to be like Chris Paul but he has to remain an offensive threat if they are going to be successful this season. Right now he is inconsistent.
