A few weeks ago it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Warriors would set a new record for wins. Now not so much.
They have been dynamite at home all season long until they suddenly became mortal.
The question is how much of a priority San Antonio makes this game. With those guys you never know.
San Antonio Spurs
Things are kind of interesting for the Spurs. They only have five games left on the schedule but with 2 against Golden State it is not totally crazy to think this team could run the table and steal the top spot in the West. I am not saying likely.
This first game will be the make or break. Win it and the math can work, lose it and you are just playing out the string to be as healthy as possible for the playoffs.
Down the stretch the Spurs have been leaning more on free agent acquisition LaMarcus Aldridge. He has seen his scoring climb all the way up to 18ppg.
Amazingly, he and leading scorer Kawhi Leonard are both shooting better than 50%. Their talent and efficiency mean that this team does not go too long without getting and making good shots.
All of the Spurs losses have been on the road this season, win or lose they might want to show they are better than the 30 point loss they suffered the last time they were at Oracle Arena.
Golden State Warriors
What are we supposed to make of Golden State. They could still put up the best regular season record in history but they also just lost to Minnesota, a non-playoff team in home.
The Warriors now have 4 games to get the three wins they need to set the single season mark. In an odd scheduling quirk they play San Antonio and Memphis both home and away. Essentially they have to get this one if they really want to have a shot because the Spurs never lose at home.
Golden State was sloppy in its loss to Minnesota. They let the Wolves shoot better than 50% from the field and they turned the ball over 23 times. It was an off game and still Minnesota needed overtime to win but it also showed that this team might be pressing a little bit right now.
After the recent losses, if Golden State is truly a great team, than they should come out with a monster effort, right. They cruised the last time these teams met in Oakland.
It is definitely going to come down to the wire in terms of the record. Awesome scheduling by the NBA it seems.
