Tuesday, November 22nd, the Sacramento Kings and Memphis Grizzlies play the second of four meetings this season. In the initial match, the Grizzlies won 125-110. Memphis will host the next game on January 1st and the teams will finish their season series on January 23rd in Sacramento.
Both teams last played on Sunday with the Kings making it closer than necessary but prevailing to extend their win streak to six in a row with the 137-129 win over the Pistons while the injury-riddled Grizzlies battled but ultimately lost 115-127 to the Nets.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Grizzlies sweeping all three contests. The Kings hold the advantage all-time having won 52 times of the club’s 100 meetings.
Sacramento Kings
Remember that Kings squad I was harping about being far more competitive than their record? Um, yeah – so they’ve jettisoned past a bunch of teams who expected to be vying for a playoff seed to rest in the fifth slot.
They’ve also got some games in hand, being among the group to have played fewer games to this point in the season.
Sacramento entered Sunday on a five-game win streak and made it six in a row with the win versus the Pistons. They almost coughed up the trap game versus a far inferior squad but recovered from giving up 70 first-half points to get the victory.
Offensively, the Kings are making a mark as one of the best on that side of the hardwood moving onto the top ladder rung scoring 121.4 points per game.
Similarly, Sacramento is performing above average with their proficiency with the best field goal percentage shooting 50.2%, and ranking seventh on the perimeter shooting 38.0%.
As stellar as the Kings have functioned on offense they are equally as abysmal defensively as evidenced by their 28th rank for opponent scoring per game (117.5).
The bloated 50.2% field goal and 39.2% perimeter percentage both rank 29th (thanks to the Spurs keeping them out of the cellar.
Unlike teams who are navigating several injuries and missing core contributors, the Kings are fully healthy.
Memphis Grizzlies
Speaking of injuries the Grizzlies are without their starting backcourt out and will be for several weeks. That removes the top two offensive talents putting a ton of pressure on Dillon Brooks and the recently returned Jaren Jackson Jr. to pick up the slack.
Sunday, the Grizzlies rested Triple J (injury management) and they still led the majority of the match but inevitably the deeper, healthier Nets wore them down.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 114.4 points per game ranking 12th overall. Memphis shoots 45.9% from the field ranking 23rd, and 36.0% from the perimeter ranking 13th.
Defensively, Memphis allow their opponents to score 114.0 points per game (17th) with their foes shooting 46.8% from the field (18th) and 36.8% from the perimeter (23rd). Even without Morant and Bane expect the defense to dramatically improve now that Triple J is back on the court.
Jackson Jr. (foot) was upgraded to probable for Tuesday. Ja Morant (ankle), Desmond Bane (toe), Ziaire Williams (knee), and Danny Green (knee) are all out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Kings are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Kings are 4-8 ATS in their last 12 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Sacramento’s last 6 games.
- Memphis is 8-1 SU in their last 9 games at home.
Free Sacramento Kings vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
While the Kings’ season is about ending their 16-year playoff drought it also feels like they’re reveling in returning the favor against teams who used to embarrass them and take great joy in doing so.
THIS iteration of the Kings can come into your house and put up 120 points with barely breaking a sweat so it’s payback time.
The dilemma in this match won’t be the Grizzlies playing solid enough defensively to limit Sacramento but in putting enough points on the board to collect a ‘W’ when they’re missing over 53 points from their star backcourt.
Clearly, the Kings haven’t garnered the oddsmaker’s respect favoring Memphis but I’m taking the points and the Kings.
