On Sunday, May 2nd, the Sacramento Kings meet the Dallas Mavericks for the third time and will attempt to sweep the season series.
Last season, the squads played four times with Dallas winning three of four contests. The Mavericks hold the all-time record having won 96 matches of the 171 played.
Sacramento Kings
The Kings were the squad who drew the unlucky short straw as LeBron James made his return against them. But in spite of the NBA’s King being back and missing their own stars (De’Aaron Fox, Harrison Barnes) they battled to get the victory.
Rookie Tyrese Haliburton got the start in Fox’s place and showed off his leadership and star potential leading the Kings with a double-double of 23 points and 10 assists plus four rebounds, two steals, a block and hit four of his eight 3-point attempts.
Richaun Holmes scored 22 with nine rebounds as one of seven Kings who scored in double-figures including four reserves. Marvin Bagley is also back for Sacramento but is coming in off the bench. He collected 11 points and four rebounds in the match.
Barnes (left adductor tightness) and Chimezie Metu (back) are both listed as doubtful for Sunday. Fox (health and safety protocols), and Robert Woodard II (back soreness) are out Sunday.
Dallas Mavericks
With a victory over the Washington Wizards, the Dallas Mavericks moved up into the fifth seed on the Western Conference ladder. They are in a virtual tie with the Lakers but get the edge given they own the tiebreaker versus LA and also lead the Southwest Division.
Dallas has won six of their last seven matches including the latest versus the Wizards. Luka Doncic returned after sitting out the game versus the Pistons to rest his achy elbow.
Turns out that was a wise decision as the youngster posted a massive triple-double of 31 points, 20 assists, and 12 rebounds. As he’s done for most of his early career Doncic added his name to the history books becoming only the fourth player to register a triple-double that included 20 assists.
Ironically, his opponent, Russell Westbrook is one of those four (Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson) who has achieved the same benchmark but on this night he came one assist shy of netting his own triple-double as he chases the Big O’s record of 181.
Kristaps Porzingis was out again after leaving the match versus the Pistons due to soreness in his knee (the same knee that caused him to miss the season start).
Dorian Finney-Smith continued his own hot streak with 22 points while Maxi Kleber (17), Tim Hardaway Jr. (16), and Dwight Powel (11) were other double-figure contributors.
Tim Hardaway Jr. had 16 points two nights after scoring a career-high 42 in a 115-105 win at Detroit with Doncic resting a sore left elbow.
Porzingis (knee) and J.J. Redick (rest) are both expected to be out Sunday. Tyrell Terry (personal) is out indefinitely.
