The road Spurs continue their West Coast swing following a Monday night game against the Golden State Warriors, while the home Blazers have been off since playing at Dallas on Saturday.
Tuesday is the first time San Antonio and Portland have faced off in 2022-23.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs had to play Monday night’s game at Golden State without Tre Young and Romeo Langford. Both were due to illness, with Langford entering health and safety protocols.
Keep an eye on their status ahead of Tuesday night.
Overall this season, the Spurs have exceeded expectations. You’re not going to call them a contender, and we’ll probably be able to lock them into lottery contention by the trade deadline, but this is a scrappy group that has found a true player to build around in Keldon Johnson.
The catch here is that the Spurs are going up against another team in Portland that has exceeded expectations. The difference, of course, is that San Antonio has somehow snuck into the play-in discussion with the fourth-youngest roster in the NBA, while the Blazers have snuck into the No. 1 spot out West through 13 games.
On the year, San Antonio is scoring 113.5 points per contest, which puts the team in 14th.
Defensively, this groups allows 118.8 points per night, which puts it in 29th—a number that ranks only ahead of the dead-last Golden State Warriors.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Trail Blazers were optimistically looking at the Nov. 15 game against San Antonio for Gary Payton II’s season debut, but word came out on Monday that the team will continue to evaluate the guard’s health.
Jusuf Nurkic is the big name to keep an eye on here. The center hasn’t played since Nov. 7 and was considered day-to-day before being struck from the lineup at Dallas.
Justise Winslow have also been out and their statuses are unclear as of this writing on Monday.
The good news for Portland is that it’s found production whether or not Nurkic has played. That’s been across the board from guys like Shaedon Sharpe and Josh Hart, but it’s largely because of newcomer Jerami Grant.
The do-it-all forward is coming off a massive 37-point performance, in which he shot nearly 60 percent from the field and completed 5-of-9 three-pointers (while blocking two shots.)
On the year, the Blazers are scoring 109.3 points per game. That number puts them in 24th, but they make up for it on defense by holding opponents to just 107.4 points per night—the sixth-best mark in the league.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
One of the big themes in this one will be pace. The team that can control it will have a distinct advantage more than usual, with Portland entering this game 29th in pace and the Spurs owning the No. 3 spot in the NBA.
Keep an eye on the injury reports ahead of tip-off, and keep an eye on which team is setting the tone once underway.
San Antonio feels like it should be able to get out and run, which will help them avoid too much time fighting Portland’s tough defense.
Blazers should get this one at home straight up, but I like the underdog to cover.
