On Tuesday, March 20th, east meets west when the Portland Trail Blazers visit the Indiana Pacers.
As I write this preview at 2:30 PM EDT on Saturday, March 19, no odds are available for this contest. What I can tell you, however, is that both Portland and Indiana hover at around 25 wins in late March, so this should be a close matchup between struggling groups.
With roughly ten regular season games remaining, the Pacers are eliminated from postseason contention. Portland sits five games behind New Orleans for the west’s final play-in spot.
These teams met way back on Nov. 5. Will they remember, remember the 5th of November?? Sorry, that one was way too easy.
Anyhow, homestanding Portland took that encounter 110-106 behind CJ McCollum (27 Pts) and Nick Powell’s (25) offensive dynamite. Indy was led that day by little T.J. McConnel’s 17 point effort. None of those players are available for tonight’s contest.
Portland Trail Blazers
Portland’s eight season playoff streak is in severe jeopardy as the 21-22′ regular campaign closes. The Blazers are also losing NBA consistency-model stature with wins becoming scarce for Chauncey Billups’s men. It’s been a tough rookie head coaching tenure for the former NBA champ while CJ McCollum now resides in New Orleans and team heartbeat Damian Lillard remains injured.
With several new faces in tow, Portland has dropped nine of its last ten. On Friday, Brooklyn handed the Blazers a third straight road defeat, 128-123.
Defensively, Portland had allowed 120-plus points in its last three outings. Overall, the Blazers cede a near-league worst 115.7 points per 100 possessions. Portland adds 109 points per 100 possessions, which ranks #25 among 30 NBA teams.
As successful stretches rapidly fade for this once reliable offering, injuries have slammed the Blazers.
The following Trail Blazers are out for Sunday’s matchup: Damian Lillard, Eric Bledsoe, Anfernee Simons, Joe Ingles, Jusuf Nurkic, Nasir Little and Didi Louzada.
That is a ton of production missing for a team that can ill afford it.
Indiana Pacers
The Pacers currently find several key names on their injured reserve, as well. Despite that misfortune, Indiana has split its last four to stand one competitive notch above Portland.
Malcolm Brogdon (25 points) and Goga Bitadze (23) gained buckets during the Pacers’s 121-118 Friday win vs. Houston. Seven Pacers reached double figure scoring on a night the team hoisted 101 FG attempts against the woebegone Rockets.
Overall, Indiana averages 111.7 points per 100 possessions and allows 114.4. The Pacers appear to have a little more going for them offensively and on the glass than a Portland offering spinning its wheels across all statistical categories.
An injury report glance shows Myles Turner, T.J. Warren, Ricky Rubio, T.J. McConnell, Isaiah Jackson and Chris Duarte will not dress on Sunday vs. the Blazers.
These setbacks proved too much for the Pacers, keeping the group out of postseason action again after last year’s absence.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Pacers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games playing on 1 days rest.
- Pacers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400
- Portland is 3-1 ATS in its last four outings.
Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction
The line for this contest just broke. And while I think Indiana has an excellent shot of beating Portland straight up from home, I don’t believe that win will top seven points.
There is simply too much roster damage, and not enough recent Pacers success for me to lay cash here on a fat-ish Indy number. I’ll go a bit against the grain, and take Portland with the Sunday cover in this east cost-west coast battle.
