Portland Trail Blazers
Portland had started to make some strides after snapping its long home losing streak. The Blazers beat Philadelphia and then the Lakers, but suffered a bad loss that sets the wrong tone for the other two games on their current East Coast road trip.
It was close going into the fourth quarter but the Hawks went on a 10–2 run to open up a double-digit lead and didn’t look back. The game ended with Terry Stotts emptying the bench for the final three minutes of what would be an 18-point loss.
Atlanta made 14 of its 30 three-point attempts, while Portland went just 1-for-12 after halftime. Damian Lillard tried to play, but wasn’t cleared in the pregame. Shabazz Napier scored 21 starting in his place. Napier is scoring over 20 a game as a starter when Lillard is injured. He will assume the scoring role next to CJ McCollum as long as Lillard remains out. Dame is questionable for Jan. 1.
The bettors who didn’t start backing the Bulls when their hot streak started are likely still looking on from the sidelines like a speculative Bitcoin investor, wondering when the Bulls are going to start sucking again.
Chicago started the season 3–20. Since December 6, the Bulls are an NBA-best 10–2. Confidence is at a maximum and it has to come down sometime, but the questions for the Bulls’ management is, to where?
Before the hot streak, there was speculation — or maybe something closer to certainty — that at least one of Robin Lopez and Nikola Mirotic would be traded before the deadline. Mirotic has come back to more than prove his worth as an offensive spark plug for a contender. Lopez has played well enough all season as an active big who will rebound and defend, at the very least.
Now, Zach LaVine is on his way back. He participated in the first of six contact practices that are designed to have him ready to return once they are completed. When he comes back, the Bulls’ rotation will be even deeper and things will look different, regardless of whether or not the front office makes a trade.
LaVine’s return is my idea of when the so-called bubble could burst, or at least a market correction will be made. Until then, I’m rolling with the red-hot Bulls.
