By the time this contest tips off on Oct. 28, the Suns and Trail Blazers will have played each other four times since the start of the preseason.
Needless to say, they’re familiar with each other at this point in the year.
The last time these two met, they combined to set an NBA opening-night record. The Blazers were on the right side of history, defeating the Suns by a record 48 points.
Now the Suns will look to exact some revenge in their first regular-season visit to the Pacific Northwest.
The Suns’ season got off to a rocky start. They lost their first three games by an average of 30.7 points per contest, with their only close outing coming at home against the young, Lonzo Ball-led Los Angeles Lakers.
Luckily for those in the desert, the team has looked better in their last two games entering this matchup with the Blazers.
Since the initial three-game skid, Phoenix has gone 2-0 with wins against the Sacramento Kings and Utah Jazz. Beating Sactown’s squad isn’t much of an accomplishment these days, but in a battle of young talent versus young talent, any victory is, well, a good victory.
Beating Utah, on the other hand, is a solid accomplishment. The Jazz’s season outlook is still in question as they look to make a name for themselves in a post-Gordon Hayward era, but they’re still a franchise that will be in the playoff hunt all year.
Against Portland, Phoenix learned from last game that it must both convert from behind the arc and prevent the Blazers from getting easy long-range looks. In their first matchup, the Suns shot just 25.9 percent from the three-point line, while Portland knocked down 58.3 percent of its shots from beyond the rainbow.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Blazers entered this season with plenty of questions, but also with cautious optimism. So far, they have plenty to be excited about.
For starters, Portland has obliterated inferior competition. That may not sound like the biggest compliment on the surface, but that’s exactly what good teams do, whereas bad teams will get a lead, let off the gas and end up in a contest that should’ve never been competitive in the first place.
The other thing the Trail Blazers can hang their hats on is the fact that their two losses have been by an average of two points to two very good teams.
Their first loss came against a Milwaukee Bucks squad hoping for home-court advantage in the playoffs, and in a game where Giannis Antetokounmpo dropped a career-high in points and had the game-saving block against Jusuf Nurkic.
The other loss came Thursday night at the hands of a last-second Blake Griffin three-pointer against a Los Angeles Clippers group that has exceeded all early-season expectations.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Under is 11-4 in the last 15 meetings in Portland.
- Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
If the Blazers can control their turnovers and convert from the three-point line, this game shouldn’t even be close by the time the final buzzer sounds.
What should be close, though, is whether or not the home squad can cover a double-digit spread.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Trail Blazers ATS
If the Suns are allowed to score in transition, this game may be closer than some expect. But if Portland keeps control of the ball and gets its usual production out of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, we should be looking at a solid double-digit victory for the Blazers—even if the ATS victory is in question late in the game.
