The Larry O’Brien trophy will be in the house on Tuesday, July 20th, as the Milwaukee Bucks attempt to finish off the Phoenix Suns and become the 2021 NBA champions.
After losing the first two games of the series Milwaukee has won three games in a row with the last victory the first time either team had broken through on the opposing team’s court. A win on Tuesday will result in the Bucks’ first title in fifty years (1971).
Phoenix Suns
Prior to their recent three-game losing streak, the Suns experienced three consecutive losses once at the end of January with two of the three matches decided in overtime.
Tuesday, their season is on the line, on the road as they attempt to extend the series and avoid losing four games in a row for the first time all year.
Phoenix could’ve won either of the last two games but uncharacteristically didn’t have their typical clutch time success. Perhaps the loss of Dario Saric and players battling injuries like Torrey Craig is taking a toll but something is definitely off with this squad who hasn’t been playing with the same swagger that got them to the Finals.
Certainly, the officials are factoring in as much as they’re allowing the teams to play more physically which favors the larger Bucks who have won the advantage in all but the initial game and hold a 111-86 free throw advantage in the series.
Giannis Antetokounmpo has tied or taken more free throws than the Suns in three of five games while averaging 13.5 attempts (averaged 9.5 FTA in season). In contrast, Chris Paul has attempted eight free throws in total or 1.6 per game (averaged 2.6 FTA in season).
The Suns Big 3 led the way with Devin Booker scoring 40 points while Deandre Ayton (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Paul (21 points, 11 assists) each recorded double-doubles.
Milwaukee Bucks
Antetokoumpo led the scoring in Game 5 with 32 points, adding nine rebounds, and six assists although he struggled from the line (4 of 11).
Game 5 was the closest game in the series and came down to a clutch time steal by Jrue Holiday on Devin Booker followed by an Antetokounmpo slam dunk coupled with an uncharacteristic CP3 foul that expanded the lead to four points removing the possibility for Phoenix to score and force overtime.
Holiday delivered arguably his most complete game in the victory registering a double-double of 27 points and 13 assists along with four rebounds, three steals, and a block.
Middleton offered 29 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Betting Trends:
- The Suns are 6-4 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The Suns are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 7-2-1 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction:
Perhaps the Suns youth finally caught up to them or the length of the Bucks was too much to overcome, but I still feel like Phoenix is the better, deeper club. Phoenix was the best road team all year and will need to draw upon that if they want to push this series to seven games.
I’ve given up expecting the officials to not play a role and if I’m honest I think the league would prefer the finals get pushed to seven games for the revenue it will generate (will that lead to Phoenix getting the whistle benefit?).
I’m not overly confident, but I’ve had the Suns from the start so I’ll stick with that prediction. For that to occur CP3 and Jae Crowder will need to deliver big games. Notably, the hardest game to win is a closeout game and the Bucks have a tendency to get tight or stuck in quicksand offensively which could also factor.
