Wednesday, July 14th, the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks tip-off in Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Fiserv Forum. In every game of the series so far the home team has held serve with the Bucks winning Game 3 by a score of 120-100.
As with most series recency bias rules the oddsmakers with them shifting their view to favoring the Bucks now that they’ve won a game.
Phoenix Suns
A game after the Suns shot 50 percent from the perimeter notching a franchise-best playoff record 20 triples they struggled from deep posting only 9 of 31 for 29 percent.
Phoenix got exposed in the frontcourt in Game 3 when Deandre Ayton got into early foul trouble. Certainly, the loss of Dario Saric was felt but Torrey Craig was clearly not 100 percent after suffering a knee contusion the game prior.
Frank Kaminsky is not a viable option and Jae Crowder is too small to tackle stopping Giannis Antetokounmpo and/or Brook Lopez. Monty Williams elected to go small and for a while, it worked.
Despite losing by 20 points there were positives takeaways with Ayton almost producing a double-double (18 points, nine rebounds) in only 24 minutes and Chris Paul registered 19 points and nine assists.
Crowder had his best offensive game of the series scoring 18 points making six of his seven 3-pointers and, Cameron Johnson continued to impress with 14 points punctuated by the dunk of the series.
Devin Booker struggled (3 of 14) to score 10 points and played only 29 minutes.
Milwaukee Bucks
Giannis Antetokounmpo was spectacular once again following up his 42 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks from Game 2 with 41 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. The difference of course being this time he got support resulting in the victory.
The back-to-back 40 points, 10 rebounds effort by Antetokounmpo put him in rare company as he joined Shaquille O’Neal as the only players to accomplish that feat in playoff history.
Jrue Holiday produced an all-around effort of 21 points, five rebounds, and nine assists while Khris Middleton offered 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
After combining to shoot 28 of 77 (36.6%) in the prior two games the duo shot 50% on 14 of 28 in Game 3.
Free throws became a talking point following Game 1 when Mike Budenholzer complained about the disparity with the Suns holding a 26-16 advantage. Game 2, Milwaukee got the 23-14 benefit with Mikal Bridges shooting eight of those 14 in the final 1:21 of the match. Again in Game 3, the Bucks got the nod 26-16.
While the officials ignored some obvious calls like Giannis repeatedly holding onto Cameron Johnson’s shirt to grab rebounds the truth is Phoenix would rather send Giannis to the line which they did 18 and 17 times the last two games.
Betting Trends:
- The Suns are 7-3 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The Suns are 8-2 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 6-3-1 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction:
With two days off between games, everyone will be well-rested — but Booker and Ayton will be the freshest of the 10 starters.
Phoenix has only lost back-to-back games once this postseason (Round 1 versus Lakers) and possesses the best playoff road record (6-3). All three road losses occurred in Game 3 and were followed by Game 4 victories.
Milwaukee played close to a perfect match Sunday, winning rebounding, assists, points in the paint, fast-break, and second-chance scoring categories. In the prior preview, I predicted the Suns would win one of the two games in Milwaukee and favored it being Game 4 and I’m sticking with that.
