Sunday, July 11th, the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks tip-off in Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Fiserv Forum. Phoenix did their job winning both games at home forcing Milwaukee to replicate that feat in order to stay competitive in the series.
Through the initial two contests, the Suns have proven challenging foes for the Bucks. In Game 1, the Suns held the lead for the majority of the match taking down Milwaukee by attacking the paint and feasting from the mid-range.
Milwaukee made defensive adjustments in Game 2 building a double-digit lead but Phoenix responded by finding open perimeter shooters to notch a franchise playoff high of 20 triples.
Phoenix Suns
As I’ve noted in the prior previews the Suns are an equal opportunity offensive squad. Case in point, four Suns are averaging 11.8 to 27.2 points per game in the playoffs while two others (9.9 and 9.6) are percentage points from registering double-figure scoring averages.
With the Bucks defensive focus shifting to stop Chris Paul and Devin Booker from penetrating the paint the Suns’ backcourt took a quarter to adjust. But, as they’ve done throughout the playoffs the duo managed to find the open man or defensive mismatch and took advantage.
There were complaints about free throw disparity in Game 1 that favored the Suns but Milwaukee had the Game 2 advantage of 23 to 14 and eight of those taken by Mikal Bridges in the final 1:21 of the match. In fact, it was a breakout game for Bridges as he scored 27 points adding seven rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
Devin Booker led the Suns in scoring with 31 points along with five rebounds and six assists while Chris Paul pitched in 23 points and eight assists. Deandre Ayton (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Jae Crowder (11 points, 10 rebounds) offered double-doubles.
Torrey Craig left the match with a knee contusion after trying to draw a charge on Antetokounmpo but while his injury looked bad, he’s listed as probable for Sunday. If he can’t go watch for Abdel Nader and/or Frank Kaminsky to get backup minutes.
Milwaukee Bucks
Giannis Antetokounmpo shocked everyone by playing in Phoenix and was impressive in both games. In fact, he was the only one of the Big 3 to live up to his superstar status.
In Game 2, he led all scorers with 42 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and a steal. He shot an efficient 15 of 22 from the field although those five perimeter shots weren’t exactly ideal (1 of 5). His 18 free throws were four more than the Suns took as a team.
Jrue Holiday was magnificent defensively but struggled offensively (7 of 21) scoring 17 points adding five rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and two blocks. Khris Middleton also struggled (5 of 16) scoring 11 points with six rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.
Through two games Holiday and Middleton have combined to shoot 28 of 77 or 36.6 percent from the field. Middleton shot well from the perimeter in Game 1 (5 of 12) but overall the pair have been cold from deep (7 of 25) shooting 28 percent through the two contests.
Pat Connaughton was the lone bright spot off the bench scoring 14 points and connecting on four 3-pointers.
Betting Trends:
- The Suns are 7-3 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The Suns are 8-a2 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction:
Milwaukee has to be frustrated as they played solid defense despite losing Game 2. They also made the correct tweaks offensively winning both the fast break (17 to 7) and paint scoring (54 to 28) battles.
Most teams play better at home so an improvement by the Bucks can be expected. Middleton and Holiday need to bring a similar effort to how they played without Antetokounmpo.
Phoenix was the best road team in the regular season and has continued that prowess in the playoffs with the best road record (6-2). And while I believe they’ll win one of the two games in Milwaukee this game is as close to a must-win as it gets for the Bucks.
