Monday, December 23rd finds the Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns playing for the first of four scheduled meetings in the front side of a home-and-home series.

Phoenix last played on Saturday, losing 133-125 to the Pistons. Meanwhile, the Nuggets are completing a back-to-back set, having defeated the Pelicans 132-129 in overtime on Sunday.

Season Series

Last season the teams played three times with the Suns winning the series two games to one while Phoenix also holds the all-time record between the squads with 104 victories in 192 matches.

*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Sunday, December 22nd. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Monday, December 23rd.

Phoenix Suns

Devin Booker will be out for a couple of games with a sore groin, and when any of the big three (Booker, Beal, Durant) sits, the lack of depth and grit on this squad becomes clear.

While the Suns are hampered financially keep an eye out for trade discussions, although that is a tricky proposition given Beal would be the main asset considered, but he has a no-trade clause in his contract.

Suns Stats

As of this posting, Phoenix ranks ninth offensively (114.4) and 22nd defensively (115.0) while their net differential is minus -0.6 which ranks 16th overall.

The Suns have struggled against the spread with a 9-18 record through 27 contests.

Suns Injury Report

To summarize the injury report…

• Bol Bol, C (OUT — knee)
• Devin Booker, SG (OUT—  groin)
• Collin Gillespie, G (OUT— ankle)

Denver Nuggets

Similarly to their opponent, the Nuggets’ biggest issue is depth. Denver has a few options at center when Jokic sits, but none of them are ideal.

DeAndre Jordan is too old, Zeke Nnaji hasn’t developed in the manner the team hoped for, while both Dario Šarić and PJ Hall are small-ball center options at best.

Nuggets Stats

Denver ranks sixth offensively (115.8) and 16th defensively (113.4) with a net differential of plus +2.4 which ranks 13th overall.

Despite their overall placement, the Nuggets aren’t solid against the spread with a 10-14-1 record through 25 contests.

Nuggets Injury Report

To summarize the injury report…

• DaRon Holmes II, PF (OUT — Achilles)
• Vlatko Cancar, SF (OUT indefinitely— knee)
