(24-21) Philadelphia 76ers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (28-20)
The 76ers whacked the Spurs in San Antonio on Friday night. Ben Simmons went 10-for-11 for 21 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
Simmons will play in this year’s Rising Stars Challenge over All-Star Weekend. He’ll be joined by his teammates Joel Embiid and Dario Saric on Team World. They all represent different continents: Simmons is from Australia; Embiid is from Cameroon; and Saric is from Croatia.
Philadelphia has won two in a row and five out of its last six are is in a three-way tie for with Milwaukee and Indiana, holding onto the sixth, seventh, eighth positions in the Eastern Conference. The Sixers have a game lead in the loss column over Milwaukee and a two-game lead over Indiana but have some more games to play. They’re also only a half-game behind Washington for the five spot.
Simmons hasn’t fallen far off the pace he set out of the gates of this season but neither has Kyle Kuzma. Jayson Tatum has struggled a bit in 2018 but the Rookie of the Year race is still most definitely on as we come down the home stretch of the last 30 games.
No rookies in the mix for OKC at the moment but the Thunder are starting to look like the team some of the more bullish pundits imagined at the start of the season.
Russell Westbrook scored 46 points against the Wizards the other night. Paul George is just putting his head down and playing tenacious defense as well as spelling Westbrook as the team’s second scorer. The biggest difference between now and the start of the season is Carmelo Anthony, though.
‘Melo has embraced his role as a third guy and doing a little bit of everything, from scoring to rebounding to assisting. It’s opened up the offense and helped the ball movement. We all knew ‘Melo had it in him from his days as the leader of Team USA in the Olympics but now we’re seeing it here in the US, in the NBA.
OKC will be on a back-to-back for this game, though, as it’s in Detroit on Saturday night before coming back home.
