Neither the Minnesota Timberwolves nor the Philadelphia 76ers are going to be competing for anything meaningful by the end of this season. The early part of the year has proven that much.
But on any given night, these two squads have the potential to be the most exciting squads on the floor.
The Philadelphia 76ers are all about one thing these days: Joel Embiid.
Finally healthy, Embiid has played in seven games and is averaging team highs in the following categories: 18 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per contest.
He’s still allergic to passing, but with the squad he has around him, you can’t really blame the guy.
Despite Embiid’s immediate success, this team is struggling to perform on either side of the floor. Offensively, this group is posting just 95.6 points per night, which is only good enough for 27th in the league.
On defense, Philly is allowing opponents to score at a rate of 108.9 points per game, which puts them at 26th in the NBA.
Against Minnesota, we’ll get to see Embiid go up against another young center — one who can legitimately claim he’s in the upper-echelon of bigs already. Containing Karl-Anthony Towns, however, isn’t a realistic goal at this juncture.
Instead, Philadelphia will need to put together a strong effort defensively to stop the surrounding pieces from going off. If players such as Ricky Rubio, Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine are able to get comfortable, it will be a long night for Sixers fans.
If you’re Minnesota, you follow a similar gameplan. Letting Embiid get his is not a problem at this point in Philly’s process because it doesn’t have the surrounding pieces to complement All-Star-worthy performances.
That said, if Minnesota allows players such as Dario Saric, Jahlil Okafor and Sergio Rodriguez to make a difference, this game will be closer than some expect.
To really establish momentum early, the Wolves should look to attack Embiid. While it’s true that letting him gain momentum isn’t a huge problem, why not look to take him out of the game with foul trouble?
Karl-Anthony Towns is as good as it gets at the center position these days, and while he has a three-point shot to help spread the floor, Minnesota would be wise to use him in the post in an attempt to remove Embiid from the equation with foul trouble.

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
The Timberwolves are heavy favorites for a reason here. They have home-court advantage, they have the best player on the floor and, quite frankly, the 76ers are bad.
But the truth is that a 10-point spread in Minnesota’s favor is more an indictment on how awful Philly looks, not an indictment to how good the Wolves at at this point in the process.
