Philly snapped a five-game losing streak with a win over the Knicks on Christmas Day. Joel Embiid played full minutes after just 14 in his return the game before and had a big game. He had another big game on Wednesday but the Sixers couldn’t hold on to a 14-point second half lead and lost in Portland.
Philly’s big players continue to play well. Embiid, Simmons, Reddick, Covington and Saric start and play a lot of minutes together but there really aren’t any plus players to spell any of them. TJ McConnell is good enough to play with hustle alone but six guys just aren’t enough.
It’s hurting Philly now as some of the younger players are getting fatigued, but the future of this season looks even more concerning, especially if Embiid can’t stay healthy, or somebody else goes down. It would help to get Markelle Fultz back but it’s hard to believe anything anybody is saying about him this season. I’ll just wait until he gets on the court.
The Nuggets nearly made it four in a row with a road win in Minnesota on Wednesday but the T’Wolves survived, forcing overtime and then winning in the extra period behind a streak of unconscious shooting from Jimmy Buckets.
Butler scored 12 of the Wolves’ 14 points in overtime. He was the best player on the floor but the Nuggets got a balanced effort from a bunch of guys, including four guys with at least 20 points.
Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray poured in 43 points in the starting lineup. Trey Lyles and Will Barton were even better off the bench, combining to score 51. Lyles had a double-double and has now scored double-digits in his last seven games as he continues to flourish in additional playing time without Paul Millsap in the fold.
And this is where Denver has a big advantage at home: the bench. While Philadelphia struggles to maintain the level of play the starters play with, Denver often gets better when Barton and company enter the game. That advantage jumps up when they are at the Pepsi Center, where role players find inspiration.
