Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers finished the season with 51 wins and 31 losses, including an impressive home record of 31-10. However, they’re going to have to ramp up their play on the road if they want to have a shot to win the East this season, as they went a mediocre 20-21 when playing away from the Wells Fargo Center.
Philadelphia comes into this series limping a bit, as Ben Simmons (Teeth), Joel Embiid (Knee), and JJ Redick (Back) are listed as questionable for Sunday’s series opener vs. a Nets team that played Philly very tough this season. They split the series, but the Nets held an advantage in point differential with 13.

Perhaps the biggest question mark out of Philly’s banged up bunch is Joel Embiid, who was quoted this morning saying he has “no idea” if he will be ready to play in game one. The Nets would look to take advantage of the big man’s absence, as Philly has gone 8-10 without Embiid this season. Embiid lit up the Nets for 30 PPG and 14.3 REB in their 4 meetings this season.
Do-it-all point guard Ben Simmons finished the season averaging 16.9 PPG, 7.7 AST, and 8.8 REB but perhaps his most important role in this series will come on the defensive end. Simmons will hope to use his elite size for the point guard position to slow down Brooklyn’s All-Star point guard, D’Angelo Russell.

“The Process” had finally come together last season as the Philly had made the playoffs for the first time since the 2011-2012 season. Unfortunately, after rolling by the Heat 4-1 in the first round, the Celtics made quick work of the 76ers in the 2nd round, sending Philly packing in 5 games.
The 76ers have their work cut out for them against a team that doesn’t have anywhere near the same type of star power as them but they possess an unparalleled grit that is hard to find in today’s NBA.
Brooklyn Nets
Coming into the season, ESPN had projected the Nets to finish 32-50 and finish 10th in the Eastern Conference. Needless to say, the Nets shocked those who wrote them off at the beginning of the season, winning 42 games and finishing 6th in the Eastern Conference.
Much of the credit for their success this season goes to GM Sean Marks and moreso Head Coach Kenny Atkinson. Under Atkinson’s tutelage, D’Angelo Russell went from NBA Draft bust to first-time All-Star, upping his scoring average 5.6 points from his 2017-2018 campaign.

Russell isn’t the only point guard on this team deserving of recognition. Spencer Dinwiddie was looking like a G-leaguer before Sean Marks brought him onto the team. He began to show glimpses of just how good he could be toward the end of last season before finally putting together a 2018-2019 campaign that should put his name in the running for most improved player of the year.
While Brookyln’s guard play might be able to compete with their counterparts, they face a significant pitfall when it comes to their bigs. The Nets only have two true big men on their roster, C Jarrett Allen and PF Ed Davis. While Allen has a rep for being a very solid defender, he began to slip down the stretch, and this could spell doom for a Nets team that will have to deal with Joel Embiid at some point even if he isn’t ready for game one.
Everyone had counted the Nets out before the season and I’m sure they’re counting them out in this series, but if they put together the type of team effort that they have all season they may be able to take Philly into deep waters. If they can manage to win at least two games, you better believe this team will have the confidence needed to win the series.

This spread seems a bit wide with the uncertainty surrounding Embiid’s availability. Even with a healthy Embiid, the Nets are very capable of keeping this thing close. Look for the Nets to hang around in this one.
