The Atlanta Hawks are seeking to wrap up their Eastern Conference semi-finals versus the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, June 18th.
Atlanta got the advantage in the series by erasing a double-digit lead for the second consecutive game. Philly led by as much as 26 points and held an 85-61 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. From that point forward Atlanta went on a 48 to 21 run culminating in a 109-106 win.
It was only the fifth time in NBA playoff history a team trailed by over 25 points and came back to win the match.
With 10.9 seconds remaining Joel Embiid who had made 20 consecutive free throws missed both. In the last two games, it’s been noticeable his leg doesn’t have as much lift as the game progresses.
Still, his effort was there as he collected a double-double of 37 points (on 12 of 20) and 13 rebounds plus he added five assists, two steals, and four blocks.
Seth Curry was also hot scoring 36 points including seven of 12 from deep. However, the other stars on the team struggled mightily.
Ben Simmons shot 4 of 14 from the charity stripe while collecting eight points and nine assists. His struggles at the line notwithstanding, arguably the bigger issue is Simmons staying aggressive offensively to push the pace leading to easy baskets for his squad.
Tobias Harris had a horrific night scoring a mere four points on 2 of 11 shooting. The trio of Embiid, Simmons, and Harris shot 1 of 8 in the fourth quarter and in the last two games are a collective 1 of 15 with Embiid being the only player to score.
Danny Green (calf) is no longer in a walking boot but is sporting a sleeve and won’t return for this series.
Trae Young was more efficient in Game 5 scoring 39 points on 10 of 23 including 17 points earned via 19 free throws and added seven assists.
Although Young gets most of the shine, his young counterpart John Collins is earning a solid reputation for delivering under pressure as he followed up a strong Game 4 with a double-double of 19 points (7 of 12) and 11 rebounds.
Yet the spark that got the Hawks back in the match was primarily provided by reserves Danilo Gallinari and Lou Williams. Gallo scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds while LouWill offered 15 points on 7 of 11 from the field.
One concern for the Hawks has to be the lack of production from their two snipers Bogdan Bogdanovic and Kevin Huerter who scored a cumulative six points.
Bogdanovic took only nine shots (3 of 9) and missed all four 3-point attempts. Huerter was scoreless on seven shots including his four 3-point attempts.
In spite of the comeback, the Hawks still haven’t shot well from the perimeter since Game 1 (42.6%) with them shooting 9 of 26 (34.6%) in Game 5.

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
I didn’t expect the Hawks to win the last two games and in fairness, Game 5 was more about the 76ers losing (read: choke). While the Hawks have risen to every occasion this is a different scenario where they’ll be under just as much pressure to win and as a young team that isn’t an easy ask.
This offseason is proving anything can happen but I’ll be shocked if the 76ers don’t come out on Friday and punch Atlanta in the mouth right from the tip. Nor will it be shocking if Doc Rivers elects to stick with his starters longer to ensure no comeback efforts this time.
