On Friday, June 11th, the Eastern Conference semi-finals between the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers shifts to State Farm Arena.
The Hawks made a bold statement in Game 1 showcasing their depth, rising star Trae Young, perimeter prowess and underestimated defense. Philly overcame losing on their homecourt for only the eighth time this season via a more concerted 118-102 defensive Game 2 victory.
The Hawks got bad news on the injury front announcing DeAndre Hunter will require season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Hunter participated in 18 of 19 games to start the season then missed 48 of the next 53 matches nursing another knee injury.
Philadelphia 76ers
It’s a common trick of head coaches to utilize opposing team comments as inspiration to motivate their clubs. While Clint Capela hasn’t been quite as verbose (yet) in this series Doc Rivers has other tangible material to motivate his superstars.
Those specific carrots are Nikola Jokic beating Joel Embiid and Rudy Gobert beating Ben Simmons for Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year awards respectively.
In truth, through two games Embiid hasn’t needed any extra prodding as he deals with a minor tear to his meniscus and despite that none of the Hawks being able to stop him.
Embiid followed up his Game 1 performance of 39 points, nine rebounds, four assists, a steal, and three blocks with an even more impressive 40 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block in Game 2.
The difference was his team played up to their top-ranked defensive identity and an x-factor on the bench rediscovered his stroke. That player was Shake Milton who was mired in such a shooting drought Rivers could barely play him versus the Heat. Milton shot 4 of 19 (21.1%) and 1 of 5 (20%) from deep in Round 1.
He played a mere 38 seconds in Game 1, but on Tuesday he broke out of the slump and in 14:15 collected 14 points on 5 of 8 from the field including 4 of 5 deep balls.
Tobias Harris (22), and Seth Curry (21) were the other double-figure contributors while Ben Simmons took only three shots scoring four points but was a factor defensively tasked to slow down Trae Young.
Atlanta Hawks
I know I’ve harped on Trae Young a ton throughout the season but Game 2 encapsulated why I tend to get on him. He is so thirsty for the spotlight it often supersedes the correct play. Forcing a bad shot when there is a wide-open teammate is never the right option.
This season Young averaged 17.7 field goal attempts and with the spotlight increased in the playoffs he took 22.2 attempts in Round 1 and 23 in Game 1 of this series. He only took 16 shots in Game 2 going 6 of 16 and 1 of 7 from deep for 21 points bolstered by his nine trips to the line.
The other part of his game I’m not a fan of is the ref baiting and it’s not like he’s alone in that habit. The best basketball includes solid two-way schemes but these phantom fouls force teams to back off defending so I’ll continue to promote the league fixing this issue.
Bogdan Bogdanovic also struggled (6 of 16) scoring 14 while Clint Capela added 10 points. Proving my point about moving the ball to the hot hand the Hawks bench feasted with Danilo Gallinari scoring 21 and Kevin Huerter adding 20.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Hawks are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
State Farm Arena will be rocking and serve as the Sixth Man for the Hawks youngsters. The Hawks’ depth is a major advantage with the reserve unit being the one positive of Game 2 as they outscored Philly 49 to 26.
Embiid’s health versus the Hawks’ depth are the key factors in this series and I’m leaning to the latter propelling Atlanta to the Game 3 victory.
