Last year, the Sixers tanked their season, and once again were awarded with the first overall pick in the NBA draft. So far, following the process seems like the way to do it. For now.
The Sixers drafted talented combo guard Markelle Fultz. Fultz showed flashes of NBA level talent during the summer league, before turning his ankle.
Philadelphia 76ers Strengths:
The Philadelphia 76ers are loaded with young talent. The Core is Ben Simmons, Joel Embid and rookie Markelle Fultz.
Last season, the Sixers tanked to get a lottery pick, hopefully for the sake of Philadelphia the risk will work. The team has a ton of youth and has arguably the best young talent in the NBA.
Ben Simmons did not play a minute last year due to a foot injury. This year, it looks like the 6’10 Simmons will be running the show at point/forward for Philadelphia.
Rookie Markelle Fultz has played three preseason games in preparation for the regular season. His dynamic scoring ability will only help the Sixers become better offensively this year.
Veteran free agent JJ Redick is an excellent shooter who will provide leadership in the locker room for Philadelphia. It looks like the shooting guard has starting to settle in. He had 19 points in his last preseason before the start of the season.
6’9 Robert Covington will return in his role at the small forward. He averaged close to 13 points per game and 6.5 rebounds last year for the Sixers. His length and raw talent will give lineups matchup issues through out the season.
At Center, Joel Embiid will be the star attraction (at least he was paid like it). The 7’0 Embiid is averaging 20.2 points and close to eight rebounds so far this preseason.
Philadelphia’s big man signed a five year deal worth 148 million with the Sixers this offseason.
The bench looks good as well. If Jahlil Okafor can focus on his health and basketball, he will be a key piece off the bench. Along with Stauskus, McConnell and Saric, on paper, Philadelphia could have one of the best benches in the Eastern conference.
Philadelphia 76ers Weaknesses:
As good as everything looks on paper, the 76ers have not showed anything in the regular season. Ben Simmons has looked sharp so far, but has yet to play in a regular season game. Same goes for Markelle Fultz.
Joel Embiid has played in just 31 regular season games, but has looked like a young unstoppable force in the paint. Both offensively and on defense.
Speaking of Embiid and Simmons, the Sixers have their fingers crossed both budding superstars can stay healthy a full season.
The same goes for Fultz. He is having ankle issues early in his 76ers career, which could raise eyebrows moving forward.
Offense won’t be an issue for this ball club. Defense, and leadership are two things the Sixers have needed over the past several season. There are a few veterans on the squad.
The addition of JJ Redick will help out with the younger players, but how they respond has yet to be seen.
Philadelphia 76ers Betting Prediction: 45-37
Vegas has set the over/under at 40.5 for this team. As long as the young core stay healthy for more than 60 games, expect the 76ers to exceed 40.5 wins and win close to 45 games this year.
If the Philadelphia core comes together as predicted, the 76ers will be an Eastern Conference playoff contender this season. The team is just too talented (on paper) not to make the Eastern conference playoffs this season.
Hopefully with everyone healthy coming into the year, the Sixers can generate some early season wins.
That means Joel Embiid will need to play like a 148 million dollar player, and Ben Simmons will need to play as cocky as his game indicates. Both players are rare talents. Its just a matter of how they can put this together.
As for 2017-18, the Philadelphia 76ers will be one of the most watched, and exciting young teams in the NBA. If the Sixers find a way to ruin this season, it will be solely on the hands of ownership and coaching staff. Philadelphia is too loaded not to be a top eight team in the East this year.
