Oklahoma City Thunder
The Thunder had to hold their breath as Dennis Smith Jr. missed what would have been a game-winner at the buzzer on Wednesday night.
It was the third close in OKC’s last four games. The Thunder has just squeaked out wins against the Kings, Magic and Thunder with a 32-point loss to the Warriors in between.
But help is reportedly on the way in the form of Cory Brewer. It is believed Brewer will sign on with the Thunder on Thursday after he was waived by the Lakers.
Brewer will reunite with his former collegiate coach. He and Billy Donovan won back-to-back NCAA titles in 2006 and 2007 before he, Al Horford and Joakim Noah all turned pro.
Brewer will fill Andre Roberson’s spot as a strong defender on the perimeter. He isn’t nearly as good as Roberson was but he might be a slightly better shooter, which isn’t exactly saying much.
Of the 19 remaining games of OKC’s schedule, five opponents are under .500. The Thunder aren’t yet a lock to even make the playoffs in the West. It sounds silly but if things go awry down the stretch, it’s possible in a packed Western Conference.
Phoenix is of course one of those teams. Actually, the Suns are two because these teams play twice in the next week.
Phoenix beat Memphis on the final day of February, its only win of the month. The Grizzlies finished February without one single win.
So with a ten-game losing streak out of their minds, the Suns will try to play a little better to start March. They have this game at home before another four in a row on the road.
Josh Jackson, the fourth overall pick in last year’s draft, had lots of growing pains early on in his NBA career but he’s starting to look more comfortable and playing a bigger role in the Suns’ scheme.
Jackson played 40 minutes in the latest win over Memphis and scored 29 points, a career-high. In fact, he averaged close to 18 points per game in 11 February games, though 26.5 percent three-point shooting won’t be acceptable for the future version of the Suns that actually wants to win.
