Monday night pits two strong teams against each other in the Oklahoma City Thunder and the home team Detroit Pistons. The Pistons are exceeding people’s expectations to date, which was punctuated recently with the victory over the superpower Golden State Warriors, even after the return of former MVP Steph Curry.
New coach Dwane Casey was long successful with the Toronto Raptors, and it’s translating down the Highway 401. He has Detroit playing a spirited, inspired brand of hoops. They’ll need to be on their game once again when the Thunder roll into town, as OKC has long had a one-man wrecking crew in guard Russell Westbrook.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Thunder are coming off a pair of wins against league cellar-dwellers Cleveland and Atlanta. Detroit should pose a much more drastic challenge for the perennial Western Conference playoff team. OKC not only features driving machine Westbook, league star Paul George leads the team in scoring with 23.5 per game. Westbrook is right behind him with 23.2 per. German guard Dennis Schroder and Aussie big man Steven Adams also chip in offensively, while Adams also racks up double-digit rebounds in the process. It’s all translated to the third spot in the West, so everything looks peachy in Oklahoma at the moment.
For years – well, ever since Kevin Durant left really – the knock on the Thunder was that they are overly reliant on notorious ball hog Westbrook. But this year, the more balanced scoring is a good look for OKC. George’s flourishing demonstrates that a star player can in fact play with Russell, and the other players like Schroder, Adams and Jerami Grant are decent supplementary pieces. We’ll see how far Westbrook and George can carry OKC in the postseason this year with Golden State still reigning supreme and the L.A. Clippers playing really well also.
It’s Westbrook’s team until he isn’t there anymore, but maybe finally that is not such a bad thing.
Detroit’s tenacity and rebounding could cause the visitors some trouble, but the Thunder can push the pace also. Detroit’s success also heavily hinges on how it is shooting, so if Oklahoma City can get in shooter’s faces, it should bode well for the visiting club.
The Boys in Motown are restoring some ‘Bad’ into their moniker again, in an endearing way. They aren’t quite the 1980s outfit with Isiah Thomas, Dennis Rodman and Bill Laimbeer, but the modern Pistons don’t mind playing aggressive and high-flying under Coach Casey. Detroit wasn’t supposed to be ready yet, but unsurprisingly, last year’s NBA Coach of the Year with Toronto has expedited the process. Don’t look now, but the Pistons have won five straight ballgames, including the aforementioned coup against the Warriors.
Human highlight reel Blake Griffin seems to finally be right at home away from Los Angeles. He’s rebounding, running the floor, throwing down slams and scoring prodigiously. Detroit also has imposing big man Andre Drummond, who is snagging over 16 rebounds a game and stuffing people to the tune of nearly two blocks per game. He chips in with over 18 points per, too. He’s a beast. In a league that seems to be perpetually be moving away from the classic big man, Drummond still thrives.
Reggie Jackson, Reggie Bullock and Ish Smith also play important roles on this cohesive team. Detroit is a Top 10 club not just in rebounding (sixth, 47.7 per game average) but in team defense – and still 12th in scoring (111.6 per game). In short, this is a team that is doing most things well at the moment. The Pistons’ Achilles heel is their three-point shooting, so if there is a night that the shots are falling, look out. This is a better club than people believed initially.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Thunder are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. Eastern Conference.
- Thunder are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.
- Pistons are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 vs. NBA Northwest.
Free Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Prediction:
Like everyone, I’ve been really impressed with the job Casey and his staff have done right off the bat, but I think that big win against the repeat NBA champs might have really expended some emotional capital. The Thunder are another good team and, if Detroit’s pencil isn’t sharp, it will likely translate to a snapping of the win streak.
We should see some truly effective getting up and down the floor in Auburn Hills on Monday night. People have discounted Detroit at their peril in 2018-19, and I will still reluctantly continue to do it for Monday night’s game. Westbrook and George should simply be enough of an offensive threat to confound the good, but continually congealing, Detroit Pistons.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Thunder ATS
To fit it in the motif of the region, people might’ve through the Pistons were a Ford Escort, and they are instead a chromed-out F-150 pickup. Time will tell if they are, in fact, a GT Mustang.
