Two teams that hope to be battling out for a playoff spot come spring time will be looking to build off of their last performance and keep it going in the early part of the season.
The Knicks have tons of talent in their lineup but with unfamiliarity with each other, their coach, and their offense.
The Pistons have virtually the same roster as last season but will hope to build off their success in be more competitive with the top of the East.
New York Knicks
The Knicks were in an uphill battle before the game started on opening night. They were facing the defending champs on the night they were raising the banner while the city of Cleveland was on cloud nine with the Indians opening the World Series across the street.
Yet, the Knicks put up a very nice effort in the first half and were within three at the break. However, an explosive quarter from Kyrie Irving and minutes limits on Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah proved to be the difference as the Knicks fell flat in the blowout.
The Knicks got a few days off and were able to settle down for their game against Memphis where they controlled the game wire to wire and showed many bright spots.
One of them being the explosiveness of Rose while the others being the contributions from role players and the patience with the offense.
The Knicks could prove to be a very up and down team early on as they sort through a bunch of kinks with chemistry and their offense.
The early play of Kristaps Porzingis is very encouraging and the energy Brandon Jennings is providing off the bench could prove vital in remaining competitive with a very weak second unit.
The Knicks will be relying on Porzingis, Noah, and Kyle O’Quinn to neutralize Piston center Andre Drummond. Keeping Drummond off the offensive glass is crucial and Noah and O’Quinn have the physicality.
I’ve made it this far without discussing Carmelo Anthony which is relieving for Knicks fans to have that many other important players to discuss. Carmelo has gotten off to slow start shooting only 39 percent in the first two games.
But, shooters are going to shoot and the offensive weapons around Carmelo take the pressure off of him which can be dangerous for other teams. If Melo gets going early against Detroit, they are in trouble because that could mean the talented Knicks lineup would be firing on all cylinders.
The presence of Drummond will give the Pistons an advantage inside in nearly every game they play. However with Porzingis and Noah both presenting strong rebounding challenges along with Carmelo who plays bigger than he is, Drummond won’t have an easy time like he frequently does.
While the Pistons await the return of Reggie Jackson, they will rely heavily on their frontcourt to provide the production.
Drummond – along with forwards Tobias Harris and Marcus Morris – make up Detroit’s top three scorers early on.
Ish Smith is not the answer at point guard as his playmaking is limited. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a phenomenal defender whose offensive skills are still trying to catch up to his defensive skills.
While Jackson may not crack the list of top 10 or 12 point guards in the league, his value to the Pistons is very high. They have capable scorers but require playmaking ability at the point guard to maximize their potential.
I think you will see the Pistons struggle early on this season without Jackson – particularly against a team like the Knicks that has a solid post defense.

Free New York Knicks vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Prediction:
The Knicks ability to spread their scoring out will present teams with issues in slowing them down. Melo can go for 30 on any given night and now the rest of their starting lineup has the ability to go for 20 as well.

I like this game to go over with the Knicks providing plenty of offense.
