The New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons meet for the third time this season. The Knicks won the October 21st (130-106) and November 11th (121-112) matches. Detroit will host the final contest on January 15th.
Both teams last played Sunday with the Knicks losing a 123-127 heartbreaker to the Grizzlies while the Pistons weren’t able to hold off the Cavaliers losing 94-102.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Knicks sweeping the series. The Knicks hold the all-time record having bested the Pistons in 216 of 392 matches.
New York Knicks
The Knicks may have lost the game Sunday, but there were positives to glean against a top-tier Grizzlies squad.
Memphis almost seemed to be toying with the Knicks letting them get close then pulling away by seven or nine and in the final frame were up by 12 but credit to the Knicks for refusing to raise the white flag and finally taking the lead at 4:10.
In one of the best clutch-time battles of the season, Jalen Brunson seemingly couldn’t miss scoring 17 of his 30 points but ultimately his pull-up jump shot with 9.8 seconds rimmed out cementing the Grizzlies’ victory.
Offensively, the Knicks score 114.6 points per game (ninth). New York shoots 45.2% from the field ranking 25th and 31.6% from the perimeter which has overtaken the Lakers for dead last in the category.
Defensively, the Knicks allow opponents to score 116.9 points per game (26th). New York allows their opponents to shoot 45.6% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking seventh and 14th respectively.
Immanuel Quickley is questionable for Tuesday.
Detroit Pistons
Although the Pistons possess the seventh-best perimeter defense holding opponents to 34% that’s the lone area they are excelling defensively.
Pistons’ opponents average 116.7 points per game ranking 25th while they allow foes to shoot 48.2% from the field ranking 26th overall.
Oddly, the area of the hardwood where there was confidence entering the season was defense. Dwane Casey is known primarily for his prowess in this area and had the Pistons ranking 15th after the All-Star break last season, so regressing to 29th is surprising.
Perhaps that’s a testament to Jerami Grant (although the Blazers might disagree given his -45 last week per John Schuhmann).
Offensively, the Pistons score 109.1 points per game (25th). From an efficiency perspective, the Pistons shoot the worst of the 30 teams with 44.0% from the field and rank 23rd from the perimeter shooting 33.2%.
As, previously noted, Detroit has played one of the tougher starting schedules considering their opponents but unlike teams like the young clubs like the Pacers, Thunder, or even the Rockets it’s hard to know what the Pistons’ identity is or where their strengths lie if it’s not defense first.
Bojan Bogdanovic (knee) and Jaden Ivey (knee) are questionable for Tuesday. Cade Cunningham (shin) and Isaiah Stewart (toe) are out until early December.

This match should be an easy victory for the Knicks and I’m banking on them not playing down to the competition and carrying over the grittiness from Sunday.
