New Orleans Pelicans
The first order of business with the Pelicans is checking up on Anthony Davis’ health. He played the last two games after sitting one out against Houston because of a re-aggravated groin.
He’s averaged 40 minutes over those last two, as well. So although he is listed as a question at Vegas Insider, one would have to assume he’s good to go.
Davis, Boogie Cousins and Jrue Holiday all had at least 25 in New Orleans’ last loss at Denver in overtime. Holiday, in particular, is the one who continues to make the difference for a suddenly dangerous Pelicans team. New Orleans has played well despite a tough schedule that continues Tuesday.
If Holiday continues playing like an all-star, the Pelicans have a legitimate shot to vault all the way up to the four-seed in the Western Conference and host a playoff series.
Of all the teams muddled in the mix after Golden State, Houston and San Antonio, New Orleans has a great shot.
The Wizards are also likely to emerge from the middle of a crowded Eastern Conference of teams around .500.
They won’t likely catch Boston, Cleveland or Toronto, but like last season, Washington is the next-best club and most likely to snag the last spot in the top half of the playoff bracket.
John Wall is back and his knee looks all right. He started with 28 minutes against Memphis, worked up to 30 and played a full 32 minutes against Cleveland on Sunday. The question is if he can stay healthy now.
It looks like Bradley Beal’s showing when Wall was out has earned him just that much more clout now that Wall is back. He’s taken more shots between the two.
Otto Porter Jr. missed Sunday’s game against Cleveland with a hip injury and he could miss this one too. Keep an eye on his status as we get closer to game-time. He is an important cog as somebody who can defend one of New Orleans’ bigs while stretching the floor.
He’ll also take advantage of New Orleans’ lack of size on the wing. The Pelicans have Davis and Cousins but they play alongside three guards, none of whom are big enough to handle Porter on a backdown.
