On Sunday, January 17th the New Orleans Pelicans will face the Sacramento Kings in their first meeting this season.
Both young clubs began the season well but have struggled to lately and are looking more like lottery teams than bonafide playoff contenders.
The Pelicans hold the all-time record between the squads with 34 victories in 62 meetings. Last season these clubs met three times with the Kings winning two of the three contests.
New Orleans Pelicans
Stan Van Gundy is having a tough time getting his young team to buy-in defensively. They began the season ranked in the top 10 but in the last week rank 23rd.

In their last match versus the Lakers, Williamson led the way with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds while Ingram scored 20 points.
I probably sound like a broken record but there is an interesting trend regarding who scores more between Ingram and Williamson.
In all four Pelicans wins Ingram scored more points. In the eight losses Zion scored more in six of seven and in the game he didn’t play Alexander-Walker led the scoring.
Clearly, Zion is a talent but teams seem content to give him two-point shots electing to focus on limiting Ingram’s full game capabilities and it’s hard to deny the results.
Lonzo Ball missed the last two games due to bilateral knee tendinopathy and is questionable for Sunday. Will Magnay is out indefinitely dealing with the league health and safety protocols.
Sacramento Kings
In the last five games, the Kings have a single victory versus the Pacers. The other four matches were lost by an average of 134.74 points while they averaged 112 points.
That led to the Kings ranking 29th defensively over the last week.
There is also tension between Marvin Bagley and De’Aaron Fox (or at least between their Dads as witnessed on social media).
But, Bagley isn’t doing himself any favors with his inept defense. As per John Schuhmann, Bagley was a league-worst minus 67 in the four games played in week three.
Tyrese Haliburton is a lock for the All-Rookie team. He’s averaging 11.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 1.3 steals. He’s shooting 52.0 percent from the perimeter on 4.5 attempts per game.
Richaun Holmes is providing great energy for the Kings and is the one player consistently invested fully on the defensive end of the floor.
Jahmi’us Ramsey missed the prior game with a groin injury and Hassan Whiteside also missed that game with a sore hip, both are questionable for Sunday.
DaQuan Jeffries is dealing with a grade three ankle sprain that has held him back from appearing this season with no timetable for a return.

Toss a coin on this one because no one knows if either team will attempt to play defense which could translate into a high-scoring match. But it’s doubtful SVG allows his club to get into an up and down track meet with the Kings especially when he has the best player.
