New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans bounced back from a double-digit home loss to Boston with a twenty-one-point win over Washington, 125–104. The win got New Orleans back to .500, where it’s been teetering around for most of the season, so far.
Tim Frazier, a former Wizard, played a whooping thirty-seven minutes and posted a double-dozen: twelve points and twelve assists. He was part of a group of six players that scored all but eight of New Orleans’ points, 117 in total.
That’s sort of the story with New Orleans, which has a decent supporting case around Anthony Davis but just not enough star-power, nor superior depth to make up for it. The Pels play at a frantic pace and can out-run themselves at times. They also aren’t well-equipped to handle even minor injuries to anyone in their small core.
They are sort of opposite of Miami, which has tons of depth, almost to the point where no one player stands above any of the others. The Heat just has a huge pileup of decent NBA rotational players and nobody to take the lead.
The alpha dog is Dwyane Wade. The problem is that he’s one of the worst players on the team but just not by enough to make it apparent. Miami’s love for the former superstar lives on, while there isn’t another star to love.
The Heat has the best overall roster in a downright embarrassing division but it continues to lose close games that shouldn’t be close. It has home losses to Brooklyn and Atlanta in its last four, overall, and five out of the last six.
This season’s offense has been a good deal worse than last year’s team but it’s hard to know exactly why. Kelly Olynyk has yet to find his rhythm, though he leads the team in eFG%. A player getting paid as much as he is, with the talent he has, ought to be playing more than seventeen minutes per game.
Then there have been the injuries. Goran Dragic missed Tuesday’s game and he’s been sitting more often than he’s been playing lately. Tyler Johnson also missed the game against the Hawks, which takes away two of Miami’s most aggressive offensive players.
The Heat lack playmaking as it is. Its defense usually keeps games against higher-scoring opponents close but it’s hard to imagine it having enough firepower to keep up with how the Pelicans can score. I like the better offense on the road.
