On Friday, November 25th, the New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies play the second of their four scheduled matches.
New Orleans won the initial match on November 15th (113-102). Memphis will host again on December 31st while New Orleans will host the final meeting on April 5th.
The Pelicans last played Wednesday routing the Spurs 129-110 while the Grizzlies played Tuesday losing 109-113 to the Kings.
Last season the clubs played four times with the Grizzlies winning three of the four contests. The Pelicans hold the all-time record with 40 wins in 73 matches versus the Grizzlies.
New Orleans Pelicans
Zion Williamson is back and if you caught the match Wednesday is clearly healthy. He was bullying the Spurs frequently seeming to bowl through three and four of them at a time.
He delivered a double-double of 32 points and 11 rebounds with an assist, two steals, and a block. The main difference for the Pelicans is his presence gives them so much more versatility.
Willie Green has the Pelicans performing well on both sides of the court but different lineups provide that success. The starters are a potent offensive lineup whereas the reserves are more defensive-oriented.
The end of games highlights this dynamic as Green has elected to bring in Jose Alvarado for the majority of the final frame and similarly replaces Jonas Valanciunas with Larry Nance Jr.
Offensively, the Pelicans rank third for scoring averaging 117.6 points per game while shooting 48.9% from the field and 38.5% from the perimeter ranking fourth in both areas.
Defensively, the Pelicans allow opponents to score 110.6 points per game, ranking 11th. New Orleans holds their opponents to 46.5 percent from the field tied with their opponent the Grizzlies in 15th and boasts the second-best perimeter ranking of 32.7 percent.
CJ McCollum (illness), Trey Murphy III (foot), and E.J. Liddell (knee) are all questionable for Friday.
Memphis Grizzlies
It was expected Ja Morant would miss the game versus the Kings but he surprised everyone by playing and almost led his club in their comeback effort falling just short of the mark.
Jaren Jackson Jr. has played in three of the four possible games since his return with the team electing to rest him against Brooklyn. In his three outings, he’s had 13 blocks for an average of 4.3 per game.
In the initial match, it was clear he was shaking off the rust but he’s scored 20 plus in each of the next two matches but is still finding his rhythm as his rebounds have teetered from 6 to 12 to 3.
As he gets more comfortable there is a solid argument to make the Grizzlies will be rising up the defensive standings.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 114.1 points per game ranking 13th overall. Memphis shoots 45.8% from the field ranking 22nd, and 35.6% from the perimeter ranking 15th.
Defensively, Memphis allow their opponents to score 113.9 points per game tied with the Hawks in 17th, with their foes shooting 46.6% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking 15th and 21st respectively.
Desmond Bane (toe), Ziaire Williams (knee), and Danny Green (knee) are all out indefinitely.

There is an interesting dynamic going on between Ja Morant and Zion Williamson in their brief careers – the Pelicans have the 7-4 edge, however, Zion didn’t play in the four losses — in other words, Ja has never beaten Zion as a pro!
Memphis was the hot young team last season, but it’s the Pelicans who are seeded higher and performing better overall on both ends of the hardwood. Morant who keeps in tune with the pulse will undoubtedly be aware of that fact and his history versus Zion.
So assuming they all come back refreshed from Turkey Day and not slowed by the tryptophan my guess is Ja will be very eager to make a statement. Expect a battle – and of all the games Friday this might be the most compelling to watch live.
My head tells me to follow the historical trends but my gut tells me not to bet against a motivated Morant and the scrappy Grizzlies.
