Monday, November 7th, the New Orleans Pelicans and Indiana Pacers play the first of two scheduled matches this season. The Pelicans will host the second meeting on December 26th.
New Orleans arrives having last played Saturday losing 121-124 in overtime to the Hawks while the Pacers shocked the Heat winning a nailbiter 101-99 on Friday.
Last season, the clubs split their two-game regular season series. The Pacers hold the all-time record having bested the Pelicans in 26 of their 44 matches
New Orleans Pelicans
Despite having their core back on the court and all five starters scoring in double-digits the Pels couldn’t close out in overtime and their bench struggled, scoring 10 points less than the Hawks.
In a rarity, three players are scoring 20 or more points with Zion Williamson producing 22.7 points while CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram each average 21.6 points.
Williamson and McCollum each scored 29 points in the loss to Atlanta while Ingram displayed the rust of missing four games and playing in a back-to-back scoring 16 but shooting an inefficient 7 of 23.
The Pelicans are scoring 118.1 points per game which rank third behind the Celtics and Grizzlies. They’re also shooting with efficiency including 48% from the field and a robust 38.5% from the perimeter which ranks fifth and seventh respectively.
Defensively, the Pelicans allow 113 points per game ranking 13th while holding them to 46.4 percent from the field (tied 15th) and they possess the best perimeter defense holding opponents to 31.3 percent from beyond the arc.
E.J. Liddell (knee) and Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) are questionable for Monday.
Indiana Pacers
So much for tanking… the Pacers are one of the clubs expected to enter the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes via tank mode but they’ve been fighting for wins including the impressive victory versus the Heat.
Although Paolo Banchero looks well positioned to win Rookie of the Year, Bennedict Mathurin is giving him a run for his money and as long as his team is winning with him being a key reason why shouldn’t he be getting greater consideration?
In the victory, Mathurin scored 23 points on just 11 shots. Buddy Hield led the Pacers in scoring with 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Tyrese Haliburton registered a near triple-double with 22 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists.
It’s likely Chad Buchanan is working the phones shopping Hield and Myles Turner in order to ensure his club can be more active tankers and more importantly to clear the spot for Mathurin to start alongside Haliburton and the duo can gain reps together.
Indy is performing better on the offensive side of the court scoring 115.8 points per game which ranks ninth. They’re shooting better from distance than overall with 44.9% efficiency from the field (25th) and 36.8% from the perimeter (11th).
On the defensive end, they allow 117.6 points (27th) per game, and opponents shoot 47.1% from the field (21st). They are the second-worst perimeter defenders allowing opponents to shoot 41 percent.
Daniel Theis (knee) and Aaron Nesmith (foot) are questionable for Monday. Chris Duarte (ankle) is out indefinitely.

Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction:
Although the Pacers can put points on the board they’ll be facing a Pelicans team who brings it on both sides of the floor and will be eager to put the Saturday overtime loss behind them.
Watch for the Pels to target Hield and Mathurin on the perimeter giving them a decided advantage if they play to their typical defensive best.
