Wednesday, November 9th the New Orleans Pelicans and Chicago Bulls play the first of two scheduled meetings. The Pelicans will host the second match on November 16th.
Both teams last played Monday with the Pelicans getting shocked by the Pacers losing 122-129 while the Bulls completed a back-to-back, home-and-home set versus the Raptors and got their revenge winning 111-97.
Last season the clubs played twice and split the regular-season series. The Bulls hold the all-time record with 25 wins in 44 matches versus the Pelicans.
New Orleans Pelicans
It’s great the Pelicans are clicking offensively and ranking high in copious categories with a deep team and plenty of weapons. But when they aren’t stopping their opponents from scoring it’s a moot point.
That’s what happened Monday as they allowed Indy to score 129 points and make 22 triples. It didn’t matter the Pels scored 122 points or that six of their players scored in double-digits. Not when they lost three of the four quarters (and only won the final frame by two points).
Indy isn’t even in the presumed mix of playoff contenders so this was the type of match New Orleans has to win if they want to be taken seriously as a playoff threat.
Instead, this served to remind Willie Green’s charges of their bad habits like falling in love with the offense and ignoring the fact defense is what wins championships.
The Pelicans sit atop the scoring throne averaging 118.5 points per game to push them ahead of everyone. They are also excelling in efficiency shooting 48.2% from the field which ranks second overall and a robust 38.8% from the perimeter ranking sixth.
Although they aren’t in the basement defensively there is work to do. New Orleans holds their foes to 114.6 points per game which ranks 12th. Their opponents shoot 46.8 percent from the field and 33.2 percent from the perimeter where they rank 18th and fifth respectively.
Larry Nance Jr. (knee) is questionable while Garrett Temple (personal) was downgraded to out Wednesday. E.J. Liddell (knee) and Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) remain out without a definitive return date.
Chicago Bulls
Zach LaVine sat out the front side of the back-to-back/home-and-home. His return dramatically impacted the situation, particularly with the Raptors’ defensive scheme on DeMar DeRozan which proved so successful in Toronto.
With LaVine back on the court in Chicago, the Raptors; double-teams on DeRozan simply freed up LaVine and/or his teammates now that there was another ballhandler/driver to take advantage of the openings.
As I predicted DeRozan simply found his running mate who scored 30 points as one of six Bulls to reach double-digit scoring.
The only downside in the win is the Raptors did keep DeRozan in check holding him to nine points on 2 of 6 shooting but again, he was happy to play ball distributor collecting seven dimes and six rebounds in the victory.
The Bulls average 111.4 points per game ranking 18th while shooting 46.1 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from the perimeter which ranks 21st and 10th respectively.
Defensively, the Bulls allow an average of 109.3 points per game ranking 10th while allowing their foes to shoot 46.3 percent from the field (15th) and 37.6 percent from the perimeter (24th).
Andre Drummond (shoulder) is questionable while Coby White (quad) was downgraded to being out Wednesday. Lonzo Ball (knee) remains out indefinitely.

Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Prediction:
Can Willie Green keep his players focused on the task at hand? That may be more difficult than normal as road-weary youngsters will finally be headed home for an extended stretch.
Seven of the 10 games New Orleans were road games but they’ll return to New Orleans after this match for a season-high six-game homestand (and 11 of the next 14).
It sounds simple, but history shows the final opposite coast road game AND the first game back are the hardest to win with the averages favoring the opponent.
There are similarities between these clubs as both try to break through as perennial playoff contenders. Injuries are plaguing the Bulls’ depth although the Pels are deeper even when both rosters are healthy.
The glass could be the x-factor because Chicago lags behind the Pels both in total rebound percentage (Pels 3rd/Bulls 12th) and particularly in offensive rebound percentage (Pels: 4th/Bulls 20th).
A harbinger for Chicago was Toronto snatched 23 offensive boards without Drummond in the lineup Sunday. Factor in the perimeter variances and I like the Pels to steal this game.
