New Orleans Pelicans
What defines a successful season for the Pelicans at this point? What defined a successful season for the Pelicans before DeMarcus Cousins got hurt?
My guess to the latter would be a win in the first round of the playoffs and maybe an entertaining second round. I can’t imagine New Orleans’ front office could ask for anything more than that in the West.
But now it appears that the franchise just wants to make the playoffs. Make the playoffs, put Anthony Davis on display and maybe gear up to trade its best player in the offseason.
The Pelicans have lost four out of five since Cousins went down with his season-ending injury. Even the addition of Nikola Mirotic hasn’t yielded a win yet.
They are now even in the loss column with the Clippers, who are seemingly indifferent to whether or not they make the playoffs at all. The Jazz is also making a serious run and is three games back in the loss column.
The Pelicans made another small move before the trade deadline, sending Dante Cunningham to the Nets for Rashad Vaugh, who was just in Brooklyn for less than a week as part of the Tyler Zeller deal. It’s an inconsequential move that shouldn’t have any effect on this game.
The Pelicans do have a game on Friday night while the Nets are free. That will give Brooklyn, which has been a great home team against the spread, a small fatigue advantage in this one.
The news on Thursday night and Friday around the team was that Jeremy Lin picked up his $12.5 million player option for next season. He is expected to be back in time for the season after missing all of this one with a knee injury.
Times have been better for Brooklyn, though. It’s lost eight out of its last nine games, a home win vs. Philadelphia sandwiched between two four-game losing streaks.
D’Angelo Russell hasn’t maintained any semblance of consistency since returning, but he’s at least now starting to produce in spots.
Russell had 22 points in the win over Philadelphia, his first 20-point game since returning from undergoing knee surgery. He scored 15 in the next one, followed by three, ten and four. So he’s still quite up and down.
I’m not convinced he’s going to be back at the level he was playing at before the injury until next season. Right now, Russell isn’t even getting the minutes necessary to put up big numbers like he was before.

Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction: Anthony Davis gobbles up Brooklyn in the City.
Instead of giving this game to the home team, I’m going to give it to the best player on the floor. Davis should dominate this game and help his team win on the road.
