(4-5) Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Portland Trail Blazers (6-2)
The T-Wolves got Jimmy Butler back on Friday night for their game with Golden State. They hung in for three quarters but the Warriors, as the Warriors do, blew the doors off in the fourth quarter behind Kevin Durant and Steph Curry.
Karl-Anthony Towns was hot early but disappeared in the second half and finished with just thirteen points. Andrew Wiggins led the team with twenty-two after catching fire for a stretch in the third period.
After scoring fifty earlier in the week, Derrick Rose played just five minutes and scored three points. A lot of it has to do with Tyus Jones making his return from injury, too.
The Wolves had their moments in the early going, playing inspired basketball after all the offseason drama but I’m just not convinced this is a playoff team. There’s so much dysfunction and the offense, frankly, just isn’t good enough to make up for a bleh defense.
In the East, sure, but out West, the Wolves don’t have what it takes to be anything more than a fringe eight-seed.
Portland Trail Blazers
After a successful road trip in which the Blazers won three out of four, including wins in Houston and Indiana and a sole loss in Miami, they embark on a six-game homestand that began with a win over the Pelicans on Thursday night.
It won’t make up for the way New Orleans ousted them from the playoffs last season but the Blazers got a measure of revenge against Anthony Davis and company and host LeBron and the Lakers for the second time in the first three weeks on Saturday night.
That makes this game the second night of a back-to-back, though Portland will stay right at home, of course. The homestand isn’t at all easy and finishes with the Bucks, Clippers and Celtics after this one against Minnesota.
Damian Lillard once again looks like a fringe MVP candidate. I mean, what more can the guy do? He’s averaging thirty on close to 50/40/90 shooting splits.
But the difference between Portland this year and Portland a year ago is some of the role players. Seth Curry and Nik Stauskas weren’t heralded additions in the offseason but they’re both bombing away in the second unit, making Evan Turner’s life easy as the playmaker.
Zach Collins has proven to be an improved shooter who’s now playing a little defense. Jake Layman is doing his job as the overlooked fifth starter.
The questions about how the Blazers will perform in the playoffs will surface again when the time comes, as they should, but for the time being, it sure looks like this is another top-half playoff team on the road to fifty wins.
