The Timberwolves beat the Trail Blazers over the weekend to complete the five-game sweep of the home stand, just the second ever in franchise history.
In his third game back from a serious left knee injury, Jeff Teague shot 8-for-15 for 22 points and tallied eight assist for the second game in a row. Teague’s presence bumps Tyus Jones to the bench, where he will lead the second unit, along with veteran guard Jamal Crawford.
Crawford was the only bench scorer in double-figures on Sunday. He finished +20 in 20 minutes of play. All five of Minnesota’s starters were in double-digits.
Minnesota has put some distance between it and the next team in the Western Conference Standings. The T-Wolves have a five-game lead over Oklahoma City for the four-seed and home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
They can set their sights on the three-seed, occupied by the Spurs, which is just half a game out of their reach.
Orlando, after starting 8–4, has gone 4–27 since. The Magic are plummeting in the standings, with only the Hawks to pass on their way down toward the basement of the Eastern Conference. The day the Magic takes its rightful spot at the bottom of the table could be here.
So the team is playing horribly, fans are long passed frustrated and now a big part of the team’s core is on the trade block. It was reported that the Magic will shop Evan Fournier, Mario Hezonja and Elfrid Payton.
Fournier is the most attractive of the three, but also the most expensive. He has two years and $34 million left on his contract, but he’s an 18 points per game scorer who is shooting over 40 percent from beyond the arc. He could conceivably go to a contender and provide some pop off the bench almost immediately.
Payton is a longer project, but one that could be attractive to a team that believes he still has potential to develop as a point guard. Problem is, he can’t really shoot.
That isn’t Hezonja’s problem, but everything else is. He is nothing more than a flier after going fifth overall in the 2015 NBA Draft.
