The Eastern Conference Finals shift to Atlanta as the Hawks host the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 3 on Sunday, June 27th. The series is tied at one game each.
Atlanta came into Milwaukee and shocked via a gritty 116-113 Game 1 victory. The Bucks who seemingly took the Hawks for granted responded with a 125-91 rout in Game 2.
Milwaukee Bucks
Through two games the Bucks experienced the pendulum wave of highs and lows (in reverse). In Game 1, Milwaukee uderestimated the Hawks and paid for it by losing home court.
Trae Young was given carte blanche to drive using his teardrop floater to score or set up lobs but equal freedom to pass the ball or pull up from deep.
Adjustments on how Young was defended were the difference to winning Game 2. Jrue Holiday got much more help, Brook Lopez stopped slagging off him and the Bucks clogged his passing lanes electing to live with giving him the perimeter as an option.
Hard to argue that defensive scheme given Young is shooting 23.8% (5 or 21) from the perimeter through two games and 31.7% in the playoffs.
A 20-0 second-quarter run put Milwaukee up big and the rout was on.
Giannis Antetokounmpo led with 25 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals needing only 29 minutes of action given the rout.
Jrue Holiday was spectacular on both sides of the hardwood dropping 22 points including 3 of 4 from deep plus seven assists.
Both Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez bounced back from abysmal performances where the former shot terribly (6 of 23) and the latter got played off the court.
Middleton made six field goals on 10 fewer shots (6 of 15) adding seven rebounds, and eight assists. Lopez stepped up with 16 points, made the Hawks pay from deep (3 of 5), and was vastly improved defensively.
Four reserves factored with eight or more points and Bobby Portis providing the x-factor energy.
Atlanta Hawks
As spectacular as Trae Young was in Game 1 his Game 2 was anything but easy. The youngster was the point of emphasis feeling the Bucks’ full-court pressure and intensity he pressed too much coughing up the ball for nine turnovers.
Young battled to score 15 points (6 of 16) and struggled from deep (1 of 8) adding two rebounds, three assists, and two steals. It was a far cry from his 48 points, 11 assists Game 1 outburst.
Ever the instigator, Young refused to credit the Bucks saying they did nothing different defensively, instead, chalking it up to how the officials called the game: “When they’re (te Bucks) aggressive and (refs) don’t call it, nights like tonight happen”.
While his scrappy nature is commendable, this opponent is a different beast than they’ve faced in the postseason. The Knicks didn’t have enough offensive talents while the 76ers were dealing with injuries and lacked depth.
John Collins was arguably the best Hawk on the floor with 11 points and eight rebounds. Danilo Gallinari (12) and Cam Reddish (11) offered scoring off the bench with the latter making his first playoff appearance having been sidelined since February 21st.

Free Milwaukee Bucks vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
Atlanta is in new territory facing a Bucks team who presents a more complete opponent with superstar talent, depth, two-way prowess, and have the defensive advantage on the majority of matchups. Young is the better overall offensive guard, but Holiday’s size is creating problems for both Trae and Bogdan Bogdanovic who is clearly struggling with that sore knee.
Barring the refs inserting themselves into the equation (which could happen) Game 3 favors the Bucks as does the series which should be a gentleman’s sweep.
