The Raptors are definitely in the playoffs. These last few games are only going to determine who they play as the playoffs develop. There might even be some strategic tanking (I doubt it). Especially with this their last home game.
Miami is not so comfortable in its positioning. They are trying to return to the playoffs, where they lost to Toronto, but every game is going to be critical in that pursuit. They might need to win them all depending on Indiana and Charlotte.
Miami is one of the more interesting teams in the league. I would have thought they would have really fallen off as they moved away from Dwayne Wade but they have been more than respectable.
They are doing it mostly with defense – they are fifth in the NBA in points allowed. They have a center that can really protect the rim and a slew of athletic young players that can really get after opponents.
Hassan Whiteside has build on what was his most productive season a year ago. He is averaging 17 and 14 and is so mobile that he can handle all of the pick and rolls that teams run today. His blocks are down but that is not an indicator of any defensive deficit.
Goran Dragic is the leading scorer at 20ppg. Some nights you wonder how he is not averaging a lot more with this group and on others you barely notice him. I don’t know if it is a Euro thing but he is just not as aggressive scoring as some other top players.
Every game counts for this team that could finish in 6th, 9th or out of the playoffs all together. They were done no scheduling favours with this trip to Toronto for the Raps final home game.
Toronto has two big questions over the final week. Who’s bracket are they going to be in the East – Cavs or not? and when is Kyle Lowry going to take the floor and show fans he is good to go.
Without him the team has become much better defensively but they need the fact that he can create offence, especially from beyond the arc if they are going to go as far in the playoffs.
The Raptors’ defense turned when they acquired Serge Ibaka and PJ Tucker. Ibaka swats shots in the paint while Tucker has been getting into the best perimeter players for each opponent in crunch time.
Toronto will want to win its final home for its fans but mostly the last week is about getting things as organized as possible for their playoff run. Lowry might even suit up for this one.
Free Miami Heat vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Down the stretch the Raptors may look to monitor the minutes of their regulars but I don’t think we need to be concerned about that being the case in this one. They should be in it to win it.
Miami definitely will be too and thus it might have a bit of a playoff vibe and not just because the Raps ended the Heat’s season a year ago. This is a good tuneup spot against a motivated team for Toronto.
