The gutted Miami Heat begin their 82-game journey opposite home-standing division rival Orlando Wednesday night.
In an offseason epitomized by stark roster turnover, both the Heat and Magic enter 16′-17′ bearing scant resemblances to the competitive entities they comprised a year ago.
The Southeast Division’s reigning Champions suffered myriad personnel losses this summer. None more substantial than “Mr. Miami” Dwyane Wade’s abrupt departure. Unable to reach contractual terms, Wade jilted South Beach for the Chicago Bulls.
Further compounding Miami’s pronounced talent exodus was the failed medical examination of Chris Bosh. In separate, yet decisive transactions, the Heat also parted with Joe Johnson and Luol Deng.
Overall, Miami witnessed 63.8% of its total points averaged disappear with this quartet of former All-Stars.
Amid such chaos the Heat scurried to re-sign Hassan Whiteside (4 year, $98 million) and Tyler Johnson (4 years, $50 million). The decimated three-time NBA championship franchise also brought in marginal signees Dion Waiters, Derrick Williams, James Johnson, Wayne Ellington and Willie Reed.
One positive, though, in Miami’s kaleidoscope of turmoil, is the tandem of Goran Dragic and Hassan Whiteside. For the Heat to prevail in Amway, it is incumbent upon this duo to provide strong performances.
In a semi-curious Draft night move, the Magic obtained declining veteran Serge Ibaka for Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova, and Domantas Sabonis. In a deal that made even less sense, Orlando signed PF/C Bismack Biyombo to a four-year $70 million contract. The truly puzzling aspect of Biyombo’s signing is that both he and Ibaka man the same position.
Perplexing trades notwithstanding, with Ibaka and Ilyasova gone, Orlando’s lone-proven perimeter scoring option becomes Evan Fournier. Team brass has strong belief in the ability of prospects Mario Hezonja and Aaron Gordon to produce this season. Also, veteran sharpshooter Jodie Meeks was brought in. However Meeks will miss the season’s first month due to injury.
Even without Meeks and Biyombo (injury), the Magic should benefit from greater depth and home-court advantage. Furthermore, Orlando will enjoy a decisive talent edge at both power forward and shooting guard. If Vucevic scores and Payton defends, the Orlando Magic will coast to victory.

Free Miami Heat vs. Orlando Magic NBA Prediction:
In this intrastate battle, the Magic have the look of a much healthier unit than rebuilding Miami. Orlando should pick up a comfortable win in their home opener.
