Sunday, November 20th the Miami Heat face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first of four scheduled meetings this season. Cleveland will host again on January 31st while the Heat will host a baseball set between the teams on March 8th and 10th.
Miami lost a heartbreaking 107-106 to the Wizards while the Cavaliers ended their five-game losing streak with a double overtime 132-122 win versus the Hornets.
Last season the teams played three times with the Cavaliers winning two of three contests. The Heat holds the all-time record having bested the Cavaliers in 74 of their 122 matches.
Miami Heat
The worst part about the Heat dealing with so many injuries is the timing of it coincides with their easiest schedule segment. And that wouldn’t be so bad if they could collect some wins off all these home games or versus teams presumed to be easier (at least on paper).
Unfortunately, they’ve had to deal with a rotating door of absences including Bam Adebayo, Jimmy Butler and the constant of Tyler Herro missing the last six games.
Offensively, the Heat score 110.0 points per game (21st) and shoot 45.3% from the field (24th) and 34.4% from the perimeter (19th).
Defensively, the Heat allow opponents to score 109.9 points per game (tied 8th with Wizards). Miami opponents shoot 47.5 percent from the field (23rd) and 36.6% from the perimeter (21st)
The injury report for Miami harkens back to the COVID-19 days when whole teams were seemingly all knocked out simultaneously. As of this writing, NINE players were listed to varying degrees of readiness.
Bam Adebayo (knee), Duncan Robinson (hand), Gabe Vincent (knee), Dewayne Dedmon (foot), and Udonis Haslem (personal) are all questionable.
Jimmy Butler (knee) is definitively out Sunday while the trio of Victor Oladipo (knee), Tyler Herro (ankle), and Omer Yurtseven (ankle) are out indefinitely.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Interesting choice by head coach J.B Bickerstaff to publicly ridicule his ‘fat cat’ squad essentially saying they were buying into their own hype without having done anything to deserve it.
Even with the ridicule it still took two overtime frames to end the losing streak against a team with four wins and missing their best player!
Bickerstaff was right – Cleveland hasn’t done anything yet and will need to EARN a home-court seed.
I warned of this weeks ago, and it came to pass but it does leave us with a couple takeaways — where was this bravado last season when they were the Cinderella of the East? Since it’s new did this mentality arrive with Donovan Mitchell?
More importantly, the Cavs backcourt receives all the praise but can we give Jarrett Allen his flowers? – The Cavs go NOWHERE without him because he is the key to their defense which coincidentally kick-starts their offense.
The losing streak has impacted their stats even offensively if ever so slightly. They score 115.9 per game (8th) shoot 47.5% from the field (10th) and 39.4 from deep (2nd).
Defensively they allow 110.1 points per game (10th), with opponents shooting 46.1% from the field (4-way tie in 13th), and 37.1% from deep (23rd).
Dean Wade (knee) is questionable for Sunday. Dylan Windler (ankle) and Ricky Rubio (knee) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Heat are 4-13 ATS in their last 17 games.
- The Cavaliers are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Miami is 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games against Cleveland.
- Cleveland is 1-5 SU in their last 6 games.
Free Miami Heat vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
What is obvious — Boston and Milwaukee are the cream of the Eastern crop with a sizeable gap before the next tier of six to 10 teams including the Cavs.
The 76ers, Heat, and Nets won’t all stay outside the top seven. Miami, Toronto, 76ers, and Bucks aren’t likely to be injury-riddled all season. Nor is it likely the Pacers, Wizards, and Knicks will maintain their current seeds.
Opponents will prepare better for Indy and Washington and frankly, I feel the Pacers are stronger but I just can’t imagine Chad Buchanan won’t make the deal(s) to get Ben Machurin starting beside Haliburton or more importantly as a small market take the swing for Wembanyama.
The Knicks and Wizards won’t keep getting to play teams minus their best player over and over and over — just to have a .500 record and those easy schedules will start to even up.
The point is, these two teams will be right in the mix for a seed somewhere between third and 10th depending on health (likely the 4-6 range). As for this game regardless of who suits up for Miami they’ll bring the grit and intensity so I’m taking the points.
