The Heat is playing in Brooklyn on Friday night as part of a five-game road trip. It will be without Tyler Johnson for that game and it’s fair to assume that he’ll probably out for this game too.
Johnson has a sprained ankle but when he went down earlier this week in Chicago, it looked like it was worse. Until he’s back, Derrick Jones Jr. will continue to start. That is, unless Jones Jr.’s NBA eligibility expires.
He’s on a two-way contract and Miami would have to open up a roster spot for him if they want him for the stretch run.
The Heat very well may up the ante for Jones Jr. It’s amazing that a prospect like Jones went unattended to for so long in the professional ranks. He will turn 21 next month and is the greatest leaper in the league.
His offensive game is highly limited but what Miami has done is turn him into a tough-nosed defender who gets his out in transition, where nobody is willing to step in front of him.
He’s got years to develop an offensive game and in the meantime, he’s proving valuable to the Heat’s playoff push.
The Heat has handled Charlotte twice already this season, once at home and another time on the road. The season series will conclude next Saturday when the Hornets go down to South Beach.
So Miami is on a road back-to-back for this one and Charlotte comes in having just had two days off in between its last game, which was also at home. Clearly, it’s advantage Charlotte as far as the scheduling of his one goes.
The Hornets destroyed Washington on Wednesday and set a franchise record in the process with 77 points in the first half. It was a great way to welcome back Steve Clifford to the bench after over a month away from the team.
Charlotte has won two in a row and has four games to make up and two teams to jump in order to get back into a position to qualify for the postseason in the Eastern Conference.
The front office is at a pivotal point.
There are trade rumors going around about Kemba Walker. Some also believe the Hornets could add a piece or two to make a push toward the playoffs if it also means securing some expiring contracts for the future.
The team is in a weird place but things may get clearer between now and the trade deadline.

Free Miami Heat vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction: if the Hornets are going to beat the Heat, it’s in this one.
Huge advantage for Charlotte with the extra rest. Miami will grind, though. It’s also the significantly better team, playing good basketball. I’ll give a slight edge to Charlotte, begrudgingly.
