The Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference is a bit of a mess. The Hornets lead the pack with a 4–5 record, followed by the Heat, Magic, Hawks and Wizards. Those final three teams have five wins between them in the first two-plus weeks of the season.
Miami was above .500 before suffering two terrible losses in consecutive games, its last two games: one at home to Sacramento and Tuesday night in Charlotte, both by double-digits.
The good news is that Miami has had quite a bit of rest going into its first game of the season against the Hawks. It’s defense looked terrible against Charlotte, which only got nineteen points from Kemba Walker but still managed to hang 125.
Miami has lots of players you like a little bit but nobody who you like a lot, including its all-star Goran Dragic, who played just twenty-five minutes and scored nine points against the Hornets. I still can’t help but feel this is the best team in the division, over eighty-two games, because of the dysfunctionality in Washington.
The Hawks have yet to play a game against a divisional opponent this season, until tonight. Atlanta has two wins: one against Cleveland and another against Dallas. Otherwise, they have lost some tough games already.
Atlanta lost at home to the Bulls, which is about as bad a loss as you can have in the present but most recently the Hawks have lost in Cleveland and at home against Sacramento. The loss to the Cavs was by twenty; the loss to the Kings, at home, I’ll remind you again, was by thirty.
So is this the early front-runner for the lottery standings? It sure looks like it. Trae Young isn’t even playing terribly. He scored another fourteen points with ten assists against Sacramento but his defense has only made the Hawks worse on that end. It’s something the franchise is going to have to figure out, if indeed it wants to build around their lottery pick from earlier this year.
Jeremy Lin had twenty-three points in as many minutes on Thursday against Sac-Town. I’d like to see Tyler Dorsey, who had a good run at the end of last season, get more involved in the offense off the bench, even if it’s as a starter. Atlanta’s starting five looks rough with Vince Carter and Alex Len.

Free Miami Heat vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction: Atlanta loses and covers.
This is Miami’s mantra. When the opponent is getting big points, take the points. No odds available yet but when they come out, Atlanta will be a sizable home ‘dog.
