Game 2 of the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz tips off on Wednesday, May 26th. The Grizzlies shocked the Jazz taking the first game 112-109.
Memphis served up the biggest surprise of the four underdogs who won on the weekend. The last-minute scratch of Donovan Mitchell certainly helped push the needle in the Grizzlies’ favor but the game wasn’t as close as the final score suggests.
This is the first time the clubs will face each other in post-season play.
The Jazz holds the all-time record between the clubs with 62 wins in 95 meetings. The Jazz swept the three games in the regular season and hold a current six-game win streak versus the Grizzlies.
Although there is no playoff history between the clubs it didn’t take long for this series to get heated.
The Grizzlies played scrappy defense held the Jazz to 25.5 percent (12 of 47) from the perimeter. That was significant as the Jazz were the fourth-ranked perimeter team with 38.7 percent efficiency on 43 attempts in the regular season.
Memphis starting backcourt was spectacular, with Dillon Brooks leading the way scoring 31 points adding seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Ja Morant rode the energy of Brooks but took over late to ensure the win nailing several little floaters in the paint and finished with 26 points, four rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
Jonas Valanciunas was rendered slightly less effective with the attention of Rudy Gobert but still managed to register a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds (six on the offensive glass) and also got Rudy in foul trouble.
Surprisingly, Kyle Anderson (Slo-Mo) was the Grizzly at the center of many of the feuds and playing instigator while delivering a solid 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a career-best six steals.
Several Jazz players in the postgame interviews noted that learning so late Mitchell was out had an impact on the team psychologically but Rudy Gobert took whining and excuses much farther.
The Jazz defensive specialist complained about the refs citing Valanciunas for committing similar fouls and whined about the inconsistency of how the game was called.
After fouling out with 11 points and 15 rebounds, he moved from the bench to the end line in order to get in Anderson’s face and chirp at him. Anderson pushed him off and Gobert flopped, no doubt hoping to draw a technical on the Grizzly.
The problem is other players got suspended this season for standing in that area behind the basket. As a leader, for Gobert to take that chance was thoughtless and selfish.
It’s clear he’s trying to plant seeds in the refs minds for Game 2 about JV but the fact he needs to do that means Valanciunas is already in his head.
Mike Conley (22 points, 11 assists) and Derrick Favors (12 points, 11 rebounds) also had double-doubles while Bojan Bogdanovic scored a team-high 29 with Jordan Clarkson adding 14 points but missed all eight 3-point attempts.
Donovan Mitchell WILL PLAY on Wednesday.
NBA Betting Trends:

- The teams are 5-5 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these clubs
- The over/under is 6-4 in the last 10 contests between the clubs
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Utah Jazz NBA Prediction:
The Grizzlies dominated paint scoring (62 to 42) in spite of Gobert’s presence. Mitchell will suit up but he hasn’t played since April 16th (17 games) so the rust and timing will be issues.
The Jazz can and will play better but Utah underestimated the Grizz and now they’ve committed the cardinal error of allowing a young squad who weren’t supposed to be here to gain confidence.
I’m taking the Jazz to win but Grizz and the points and watch out — if the Grizz steal a second game things could get very interesting in Memphis.
