This is the first game of what is expected to be a very short series in the Western Conference.
On paper there is no aspect where the Grizzlies can be considered the better team, but they will still have to play at least 4 times.
The Spurs will look to make quick work and preserve their energy for a long postseason run.
If the season were about a week longer the Grizzlies probably would have slid right out of the playoffs. As it is they seem to be tasked with an impossible matchup against the elite and efficient San Antonio Spurs. A team they did not beat during the regular season.
For Memphis to have a chance they need to get inspired play from Zach Randolph. He is a legitimate got to scorer but if he doesn’t get at least 25 in a game I am not sure this group can get 90 points.
In addition they will need smart play from the likes of Matt Barnes and Lance Stephenson. Their games are about getting under opponent’s skin but they will also have to play defense and put the ball in the basket.
There will be no Marc Gasol and no Mike Conley but Tony Allen is questionable. As they look to muck it up having his defensive presence will be key.
I am trying to paint a picture of how the Grizzlies might compete but really I just don’t see it.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs seemed more than happy to let the Warriors grab all of the regular season headlines this season. Their focus is on another title.
With that in mind they are a completely different team from what we are used to. They have new scoring leadership and probably more depth than ever. Lots of guys chasing a ring with this group.
The Spurs system works and it has made a star of Kawhi Leonard. It is rare that a leading scorer is also the team’s best defensive player but that is what he is.
He will be very dangerous because he likely will not have to exert max effort on defense. The Grizzlies just don’t have someone requiring that kind of dedication to guard.
San Antonio wants to win this series with ease, the way they have during the regular season. They know who they are and what to do.
The line on this one is huge. A key component are the Memphis injuries but also the fact that this team just goes about their business.

I was not at all surprised that the number on this one is as big as it is. This is the playoffs so we should be a little shocked but the gap between these two teams is huge right now.
